DayZ steam price increases +15% and then immediately goes on sale for 15% off

ObscureMammal

Source: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/pressreleases/231061/DAYZ_Status_and_Pricing_Policy_Updates.php

Along with the updates, you can expect a new price point for DayZ which will be 34.99 USD. This is part of a gradual price change as we progress with the development, and reach the goals that we set for the project. We would like to avoid a sudden increase in price once we hit the final release version. The current price of 23.99 EUR/29.99 USD will still be available during the Steam Fall sale.

Is this even legal?

Here's the thread from /r/Games on reddit where I saw this https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/2niu0m/dayz_steam_price_increases_15_and_then/

yesterday's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why

Is this even legal?

Why would it not be legal?

Amazon pulls this shit all the time; and it seems like they planned to continuously raise the price until its official (non beta) release.

Sounds perfectly legal but also sounds like a pretty stupid way to get around the steam sale.

Its a scam at this point IMO.

It shouldn't even be considered a Alpha from what I've seen / heard.

Go play Miscreated in stead. It runs on Cry Engine 3 so it will be less broken.

The cost of this game... near the end, I end up spending time in an orchard picking apples from trees with my friends. 10/10 GOTY 2014

I've still had quite some fun from the current state of it, so meh...

I was just wondering if it would be some sort of consumer protection problem for them

DayZ Standalone is a scam in that they are using money from the PC version to fund development of the console version. And all they've added in the past year are hats and ironic backpacks.

Wait until it's fully released on Nevuary 32nd 2016.

Then spend more money? I don't know if you have deep pockets, but I surely don't. Yes What I am saying is I will not be able to afford $15-$20 added onto the now raised price when it fully releases. I do have a job but have more important things I need to pay for, why not buy it now. and put that $20 in my gas tank to get to class.

The biggest joke is beta q4 2015. Even the peops who jizz a bit every time a new sort of promising survival sim comes out will be over it, and also I'm sure shit that sorta works like h1z1 or miscreated or whateves is the in thing will have taken over.

It's legal in America. I don't think it is legal in the UK or Europe and it is definitely against Australian Consumer Law. But until Valve get their arses handed to them by the ACCC they will only continue to abide by US law. (Valve is responsible as it's their platform.)

Here is an example. Pretty similar conduct.

But why?

They don't have to participate in the Steam sale, it's not compulsary, many devs choose not to.

Its certainly illegal in UK. Consumer law is clear, an items price must remain stagnant for a minimum of 3 months before any discount may be applied. DFS & SCS both got prosecuted earlier this year for breaching this law.

To make your game look more valuable. And I saw a wonderful article somewhere with an indie dev about how steam sale hurt smaller companies because of how callus people have become to steam sales. 'When one pops up 3 times a year and games are discounted 50-90% off people tend to wait. And then if you don't put your game on sale nobody buys it. They just wait.' paraphrasing but that's how some feel. So jacking up the price then making your game look like it's cheaper than normal will give the average consumer a bigger reason to buy. Why do you think amazon NEVER adjusts pricing? You can pick any item out of a hat and it will say sale because the original price will never change. Do you think a 240gb kingston ssd now is normally $370 on amazon and selling just for today at 93? lol

Bohemia Interactive did it with ARMA III. I bought it in Alpha and then left it. It went up buy £10 or something like that.

The price will stay at 34.99 USD for a long time the sale is the last chance to get it for the old price.

the devs are cheapskates, i seen a post (can't remember where) about how someone left a review and the dev flagged it as offensive and tried to have it removed, i seen the review myselft and it was in no way offensive. Roll on h1z1

This might be illegal several places in Europe. As far as i know in Denmark you can't call something discounted unless it has cost the full price for a certain period beforehand. Not sure if digital goods are covered though
