Bios Flash MSI Z97S SLI plus

Go to solution Solved by c3p0_,

Yes that's how firmware works :) Should be no issues. Hoping bios versions in asus all the time, no issues.

Hello good folk of the LTT community!

So I'm ordering a 4790k with an MSI Z97S Sli plus soon and I would like to do this properly and update the bios. I have never flashed the bios before so I was planning on using the Live Update 6 desktop program to update the bios. Now I'm expecting to have the bios delivered with a relatively old Bios (newest is 1.6, let's say I get is with 1.3). I'm assuming there will be no issues but just want to be sure: I can update straight from 1.3 to 1.6 without first having to update to 1.4 and 1.5 right?

I'd assume so

/Live Update 6 handled my Z97s bios update all on its own.

Why the sli plus? There are better options at the same price.

And yes, you can go from 1.3 to 1.6 without a problem. I went from F4 5o F8c without a problem on my x99 ud5.

Because I was able to get a deal on them and got them for €70 which is an excellent price

I see 100% positive on the Live update, give me a good reason not to use it

Flashing from a USB is not 100% safe either so this is just horseshit to use against just the desktop app

Again no arguments. Christ I'm beginning to believe you hate it JUST because it failed on you ONCE. Bios flashing is not 100% safe, whether done from the desktop or from a USB stick using M-flash.

right because clearly flashing from windows is safer then flashing from DOS

by all means enjoy rmaing your board because there is a 1/5 chance live update will bomb out

either because the flash routine its self failed or something interfered with it

If live update really caused that many boards to fail, then don't you think MSI would remove the bios update feature from it? No company wants to deal with extra RMA's.

they would't rma it anyway your point is invalid no motherboard vendor on the planet will RMA a board for a failed bios update this has bee SOP for YEARS

if a have a bios update go wrong you have no warranty  PERIOD even if its msi's software at fault

they will either refuse to deal with you or charge you for a repair

so I am telling you again don't use liveupdate there a very high chance it will brick the board!

create a boot-able fat formatted usb key using the following process

download rufus from: http://rufus.akeo.ie/

insert the flash drive you want to use

select create bootable disk using freedos

extract the .zip containing the bios image to the usb key

now this is the critical part don't use the automated flash mode provided by AFUdos

boot from the usb drive

then make a backup

afudos AMIBOOT.ROM /O

TODO THE ACTUAL UPDATE

Use this SYNTAX

AFUDOS E7930IMS.160  /P /B /N /C

The default flash procedure issues a automatic reboot without first allowing you to check and see if anything went wrong

Reboot and pray

if the system doesn't come back up don't panic make sure you have a sata optical drive handy as well as a ps2 keyboard

then using the backup you just made

follow this guide
