Nobody wants 1080p'ness anymore

Well it's holiday season after all, According to DisplaySearch report global TV shipments suggests consumers may be ready for new TVs this year & is mostly focused on new screen resolution which dwarfs previous HDTV resolution & fresher models and that is Ultra HD Televisions.

Shipments of 4K televisions jumped more than 500% last quarter as overall global TV shipments rebounded.

According tot Displaysearch,  more than 3 million 4K televisions UHDTV's shipped to retail outlets during the third quarter this year , bringing total shipments for 2014 up to 6.4 million in total shipments.

According to the report currently China is the leading market for 4K TVs which is accounted for more than 60% of global shipments last quarter. Samsung leads the global market for 4K televisions with a 36 percent share

LG Electronics was the No.2 brand during the third quarter with 15% of the global 4K TV market, while Sony captured the No.4 spot with 9% of the market,

Overall, global TV shipments improved 4% year over year, with LCD (liquid crystal display) TV shipments barely compensating for a decline in shipments of plasma TVs and old-school CRT TVs. North America led demand for LCD TVs in the quarter.

                                                                                                            - Display Search Report

Increased TV shipments in the third quarter also suggest retailers have high expectations for Black Friday, and even pre-Black Friday, sales

While overall global TV shipments improved this quarter, the TV industry has suffered several quarters of weak growth. Annual TV shipment growth averaged less than 1 percent in the first half of this year,

4K TVs are expected to reach a fever pitch next quarter, as broader competition and lower price points continue to drive demand, said Paul Gagnon, director of global TV research at DisplaySearch ...

Shipments... not sales.

A big portion of this will rot in warehouses and stores until prices are reasonable and 51% of content is 4K.

I didn't even know 4k tvs were this popular...

They aren't. We're talking shipments to distributors, not sales to consumers. The industry is just making a very big gamble (mistake)

Funny how TV channels are still on 480p, and people buy 4k TV's because they think they can watch their fav (480p) channels in 4k.

Happy with my 720p TV. Don't really need anything better if everything other than HD channels aren't even over 480p.

even a 4k monitor is not that usefull to me at this time due to the lack of 4k content maybe if more 4k stuff comes out and the monitors become more affordable i MAY buy one but not really to fussed atm

This is a stupid move by tv manufacturers one they will pay for dearly in a couple months. 4k adoption will not be fast. There is little point. TV channels don't broadcast in 4k, game consoles don't support 4k, who are they expecting to buy those TVs?

Filmed? at 720p? i can't think of anything other than news that is filmed at such a low resolution, movies are usually filmed above 1080p and scaled back down.

I sold TVs at walmart, most people don't think that HD tvs are better than their old TVs, and the demo we ran there was at 480p over component cables on HDTVs.

To see 4k being adopted this quickly is outstanding.

TVs, monitors, cameras, and now content is slowly being rolled out into 4K. Graphics cards are reaching the point where 4k can be run off a single card. The only thing the 4k market needs is for ISPs to adopt faster data speeds and the removal of data caps.

It's a shame (at least here in the US) that our internet infrastructure is stifling innovation and progress.

thats the thing. Its not being adopted at a fast pace at all. There is not much content yet. They ship tvs without a purpose other than to sell them. Thats not going to work out well.

Yup that's part of growing. Definitely not going to happen overnight. They did the same thing with 1080p TVs in 2005. There was no content, mostly all upscaled.
