Gaming on 1080p, not sure what to get?

Nightly

I really want to play games maxed out at 60 FPS, should I go with a Intel i7 4790k and a GTX 970 or a i5 4690k with a GTX 980?

@Nightly..........welcome :)

I would get the i5 4690k and a GTX 970 and put the money saved to a 1ms 1080p monitor.

In other words....a TN monitor. ;)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

Underlines for importance. Primarily being that your not just looking at current title performance, but the future playability of future titles, to which a single GTX 760 and 270x may not be able to provide... (Without knowing the future who knows really)

For current and future titles

GTX 970/R9-290

Or better

For playable framerates in current/future titles

GTX770 or R9-280

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

In other words....a TN monitor. ;)

he can also get an IPS if he prefers, it will just cost a bit more than the TN.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

if the objective is primarily gaming i would definitely say i5 and 970, no doubt.

i would like to know more specifically what games to give proper advice.

but out of the options you gave those are the ones i would opt for.

the same principle applies to both, from i5 to i7 is marginally better to no difference.

the 980 is more of a flagship product, it does not provide a compelling value over the

970 at all. 60% more cost for 20% more performance.

the 970 is plenty powerfull, don't spend any less time on the monitor if you are also

purchasing that, the monitor is indeed VERY important for the overall visual experience.

I would do Core i5 4690k and r9 290. The r9 290 is so damn cheap right now it would be stupid not to buy it!

I'd go 4690k/4790k and GTX 970. The difference in price between the 970 and 980 is way too much to get the same 60 FPS with VSync on for 1080p. Buy the processors soon though: Newegg has the i5-4690k  + a $10 newegg giftcard  for $210 (regular price $240) and they have the i7-4790k for $300 (regular price $340). Newegg's Black Friday prices come out at 1PM PST today, so maybe they're even better by then.

I don't care about it being cheap, I want something that gives performance.

An r9 290 performs really well in modern games at 1080p and 1440p so beyond that is just for a bigger epeen or you have a higher refresh rate monitor than the typical 60hz panel

That looks like an amazing build, going to go for it but I'm switching the R9 290 for an MSI GTX 970. I'm not a fan of AMD.
