You will probably need to format it by going to computer management in administrative tools, then storage, disc management and right click on the drive and select format, NTFS is the format you will want.

there is no storage and disc management in administrative tools. Defragment and optimize drives, and Disk Cleanup.

are you sure formatting it is the only way? cause i have some files in there that i need.

You have to go to computer management, sorry I may have made that unclear, then storage, disc management, the drive will be in there, if it is already formatted I don't think you will have to, maybe as simple as assigning a drive letter to that drive

Sorry, my fault I thought it was a new build failed to read the last line, skim read your original post, I have no idea why it is behaving like that, maybe try a virus scan and apply the hotfix

It's worth trying, though can't hurt to have a look for an 8.1 one though

tried the hotfix. rebooted and the hard drive is back again. well see if it will be gone again after some time. maybe the 550 watts gold isnt enough for my computer? 3hard drives, 1 ssd, gtx 780, and 4690k?

OCed? I would have gone 600-650, I use 750W for an OCed 780Ti and i5 4690K with an H105, a SSD and a HDD

Having just used the BeQuiet PSU calculator, which I find tends to be pretty accurate, they reckon a 550W should be up to the task, besides I don't think one hard drive would stop working particularly not when the system is idling, I would check power saving on the system/hard drive particularly if it was your friends boot drive, I could be talking bollocks, but that is what I would do.

it says 550 watts should be enough. on my power options. i turned off the hard disk sleep timer. set it to never. ive read too that the hard drive that disappears is a green drive. maybe like a wd green.

Download a program that can read a hard drives S.M.A.R.T. data and make sure its not giving off any errors. Just because the drive works sometimes does not mean the drive is in a healthy state. I would also suggest trying a different SATA port and a different SATA cable just to rule out those being an issue.

what is that program? i tried using a different sata port on the motherboard. havent tried a different sata cable. i just feel that once the hard drive sleeps. it cant wake up unless reboot. i cant make it to not sleep cause its a green drive *i think*

There are tons of programs that read S.M.A.R.T. data. AIDA64, Defraggler, SmartMonToos, Speccy, SpeedFan, Seagate's SeaTools, and Western Digital has a program too but I can't remember the name of it.

i dont think there is something wrong with my hard drive. i just think that when it goes to sleep. i cant wake it up unless i reboot. thats why its undetectable. :( wish someone can help me. :(
