is MSI's Zero Frozr/Asus DirectCU II with 0dB Fan is it really that useful?

Daniel91

today I and a few of my classmates had a lan party gaming session with my dad and me, we were tryong out the latest far cry.

Matt brought his MITX carrying rig (BitFenix Prodigy) he uses a MSI GTX970 Gaming 4GB.

He said 90% of the games he plays the fan turns on no matter what, so is that app really that useful?

When your not gaming it means the fan isnt spinning=less noise. Even with the fan slightly spinning up while gaming if you have headphones/a headset on you wont hear the fan.

its only really used when the PC is idle, so when you are browing the web, doing spreadseets for work etc etc etc

When gaming the fan will pretty much always spin as the GPU is kicking out heat

I'm running gigabyte G1s in my own rig on SLI they are quiet even without the app

my dad says GPU with that app can give the GPU a extra reason to fail

I really value silence with my PC so I absolutely love the 0db fans on my 980 MSI gaming.

It is great for watching videos, browsing the web and playing a little bit older or less demanding games .

Hell, I was playing Modded Skyrim today with out an ENB and the card never went higher than 50c, thus the fans never turned on.

What logical reason is there for that? A GPU can run at 60c its entire life and last just as long as one that was only ever at 30c

I disabled it on my 980. I didnt really care for the ~55C idle temp so I created a pretty conservative fan curve. I still cannot hear the fan on the GPU and it idles at ~38C.

Some people may really like the Zero Decibel mode, I didnt care for it.

Different strokes I guess.

It's a gimmick - I can't hear my G1 970 with the fans at 34% (minimum setting) and I can't hear them at 50%, only at 60% do they even become faintly audible, and that's about as fast as they will go when gaming.

In my eyes, a good cooling system that delivers great temps all the time without making much noise is better than no cooling system at all until x degrees.

It is completely useless.

There is literally no difference between fans not spinning or spinning at %25 speed in idle mode. You won't hear both.

This is my experience. When idling my fans run at 25% on my Strix and its inaudible.
