Do you need the performance? If not, no.

980s are pretty much a waste in general. A 290/970 in Xfire/SLI would serve you nicely in 1080p or 1440p.

What kind of gaming are you looking forward to?

It really depends on if you could wait till February of 2015, and if you need the extra performance boost.

Why would you ever need more than 4GB vram?

Some games demand more than 3GB vram on 1080p, and 1440p demands even more

No no no! 8Gb version is never going to give you advantage unless you use surround 4k setup.

Games are starting to require a lot of vram; couple that with multiple monitors (even a single 4k monitor) and you've got some power hungry requirements.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

IMPORTANT NOTE: if your not going SLI, DO NOT get the 8GB version of the card

The cards were just simply not designed to use that much vram and the only solution to use it effectively is crossfire/sli.

Pascal will be the first arch capable of handling 8GB of vram with a single card and most likely the first series that makes 4K gaming look like a reality for most people.
