Ubuntu Touch finalized, first phones coming this year

Oh snap!

Ubuntu smartphone is finally coming? :D

It has been a long time since we last heard about it.

I know you can download beta version but not an actual smartphone manufacture with Ubuntu OS.

I wonder if they would actually learn from other competitors mistake and improve it a lot? :D

What do you guys think? :P

Nice, although I wonder, is this just like a linux distro compiled for ARM (with a few tweaks here and there) or is it something completely new?

Anyway I'm interested and if this turns out to be a good OS I might switch to it after this 1+1 dies.

Hmm, I wouldn't say so.

I mean Ubuntu has a really big community, so I am assuming they are already on the work. :P

Look how mainstream window devices are. They still have limited apps, so I wouldn't be too sure about that

You guys remember this?

Nope.

I wasn't paying much attention to Ubuntu on smartphone, and I didn't know about this Ubuntu Edge, however, the Ubuntu Edge might fail. I mean it sound expensive, but it might worth a try.

Well, their apps are still growing but slowly.

Maybe a lot of people aren't big fan of Windows smartphone compare to Android and iPhone.

Oh dear, they might put a lot of bloatwares on it...

Well, I am not a hundred percent if you can put bloatwares on it.

Ubuntu Edge already failed, it didn't reach its eleventy billion dollars fundraiser goal.

Well, Android is running on a somewhat dumbed down  linux kernal "Android uses the Dalvik virtual machine to essentially run applications written in Java." quoted from howtogeek.com 's "Android is Based on Linux, But What Does That Mean?" article.

But as a general rule it can be said that the answer to the question:"can you do X on linux?" is yes. Or the sentence "it can't be done" is an encouragement to try.

If Samsung tried to put Ubuntu on their phones.....

Unlikely, Canonicals goal is openness except for when you listen to Richard Stallmans "We Need To Teach Canonical A Lesson"

and Samsungs goal is money.

Again not likely although Ubuntu could be called bloated... then again just uninstall the bloat I don't think they'll lock it down.

I have high hopes for this although I'd like to see other distros going mobile too, I think I've seen something about the Fedora -project considering it... yep here!

hope this helps and I'm not talking too much out of my bum.

Oh boy! I can't wait for the full release version shipped on a phone!

I put Ubuntu on a Nexus 4 that I bought just to use for Ubuntu, and it was good! But the apps let it down (so much that I switched back to my iPhone 5)!

There wasn't a working spottily app at all.

The Twitter and FB apps were just HTML pages wrapped in a native launcher (and because of that didn't function properly)

The mail app was pretty poor too! - It wouldn't let me have more than one mail account (if I remember correctly, I could ONLY have gmail set up, which I don't use) - I have a Yahoo, Exchange and two hotmail accounts, none of which would work.

And as a result I had to flash back to Andriod, and put the new phone back in the drawer and go back to my iPhone 5.

but I think I'll give it ago again when I get home later and see if the apps have been improved any! If they have, I might just switch to Ubuntu for phone.

As long as the mainstream apps* are there, I'll be happy!

*What I consider 'mainstream':

Mail (for any type of account, and allowing more than one account)

Facebook (+messenger if it still needs it's own app for that...)

Twitter

Google Maps

Snapchat

WhatsApp

Generic web browser (not bothered which, they're all the same on mobile - IMHO, but then again I don't really use the web much on my mobile)

I would like these but not fussed if they don't work:

Tinder

Instagram

Vine

eBay

Amazon

Yelling Goats Soundboard

Weather App (I like the Yahoo one).

As long as my first list of 'mainstream' apps work fine, I think I'll stick with it! :D

Haha, it was one of those few threads that it is really awesome to talk about at first then forgot about it, lol.

Anyway, I don't have any more info about it, sorry. :(

Tried to look it, and it is pretty much the same thing the website cover it.

those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
