Shared DIMMs

Having read recently on AMD APUs and Intel's integrated graphics, when can we see modular CPUs and GPUs sharing DIMMs on desktop offerings? I know it will be extremely hard to implement as the motherboards themselves would have TWO sockets (CPU and GPU) but overall would contribute to a much cleaner design for PCs in general...

Something like a unified or Nvdia/AMD GPU socket and a Intel/AMD CPU socket.. IDK, maybe even separate dedicated DIMMs for each

Oh and hi, I'm brand-spanking new here so cheers :)

Welcome to the forum :) So you basically mean something like laptop ? But CPU socket and GPU socket in a mATX, ATX etc. sizes.

I don't see something like that being used in the next couple years, since manufacturers have a hard time making more powerfull cards on a full PCB.

I don't see this happening for a while, because nv/amd and Int/amd aren't willing to cooperate to make "unified" products. For CPU's, they used to share sockets at one point(Socket 7 anybody?), but now the technologies being used varies soo much that it might cripple advancements just to make things compatible. It would be cool though.

And welcome to the forums :)

Well its just for now, HSA seems to have a lot of potential in getting this setup to work together, and possible VRAM bottlenecks can be easily solved with a stick of RAM or two.  PCIe would be more reserved for storage and caching.

But yes, a laptop-style motherboard with separate sockets for desktop CPUs and GPUs, and a hella lot of DIMM slots would be the next form factor, I think
