Which 970 should I get?

Go to solution Solved by Archangel1994,

So is coil whine just bad luck?

Pretty much. Only OCUK has a "super board" as far as I know that guarantees no coil whine which is reference cooler or custom loop only really. I recommend the MSI TF V or the G1 Gaming

Hi, right now I have a GTX 760 and planning on selling it to get a GTX 970. The two I have been keeping an eye on are the MSI and ASUS version. I want the MSI one because it's £25(€31,$39) cheaper but I have heard lot of coil whine issues with the MSI version and the ASUS version does not have as much. So should I spend the £25 extra for the ASUS one or go with the MSI?

ASUS one does not have more or less coil whine and the same goes for all the brands.

To list the best ones:

Asus Strix is quietest one but less OC potential

MSI is best balance between quiet and performance with balanced OC potential

Gigabyte G1 gaming/EVGA ACX 2.0 FTW are the best performing with best OC potential (Note that the G1 gaming is still really quiet with fans @ 50%, EVGA ACX 2.0 gets loud apparently)

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

Which MSI you are talking about? The Blue/Tiger 4gd5t or the Red Gaming one?

Regardless, I would NEVER recommend the Asus, aside for looks. Costs more, and has lower performance. It's quieter, yeah, but not only you can fix that with fan profiles on other cards, but you also have OTHER components such as cas fans, CPU cooler and ambient noise.
