Windows 8.1 64 bit freezing, no bluescreens

NickTheMajin

This issue arose the other day and I'm not quite sure where to start in trouble shooting it. My desktop completely locks up. No mouse movement, no keyboard input is registered. Everything freezes requiring a hard reset of the computer. My devices stay powered. The keyboard lights remain lit up, my iPhone continues charging and my mouse lights up. But the computer completely locks up.

Thus far this has not happened when gaming at all. I was playing Fifa for around 12 hours the past two days with no issues at all. This freeze up has happened twice while watching youtube videos and once while roaming around windows explorer. So I don't think it's a video driver issue.

Any ideas on where to start?

Sounds like it's your GPU. Try running some stress test on it, and see if it freezes. If it does, then it's guaranteed your GPU is at fault. Also, if you still have doubts, you can always ask a friend to lend you his GPU to try it, and verify it.

I've been able to game just fine. Wouldn't issues have arose if it truly was my graphics card at fault? Never seen an artifact or slowdown during gameplay.

Have you tried checking windows event viewer? Right after the freezes, check it out to see what's the error related to.

Checking that I see a million and one events related to the hard drive (Slight exaggeration, there are a bit under 18,000 nearly all related to the hard drive.

"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation."

"The IO operation at logical block address 0x3efd78 for Disk 0 (PDO name: \Device\00000031) was retried."

Repeated over and over again.

Well computer just did the crash again. This time for the first time in a game (NBA 2k15). Checked through the event viewer and got a bunch of disk errors again and several ESENT errors

Edit: Just ran furmark for 10 minutes with youtube playing in the background with zero errors. So the system crash seems random as hell. Does the system completely locking up with no mouse movement sound like a harddrive problem?
