It doesn't have to be currently there is not a better amd gpu than the 980 (unless your doing alot of opencl) and amd cpus are pretty behind.

Why all the money on case fans? As far as I know corsair fans are pretty meh at best. I recently got 3 rosewill hyperborea's 140mm fans and they are really quiet and have 85cfm and cost half as much. Just going to put that out there. Corsair stuff is usually overpriced.

Yes, I know. The main reason for the corsair fan is the asthetics. However i did get two noctua nf-a14's for the two front intakes as they are not visible. And it will serve a lot better then corsairs in the front. And I can probably cut back on two or one fans if I needed too.

My point is that that build is not optimised for gaming, because a lot of money is wasted on a 980, 4790k, excessively overpriced ram, etc...

the 980 is pretty optimized for gaming and the 4790k is probably one of the best CPU to get for gaming/video editing. Not much of a difference but a difference of 4-5 fps. compared to the i5 4690k. And crossfire and sli has some issues.

How's it not optimized for gaming?

@Enderman

Instead of wasting money on a 4790k (which will only give a couple fps more than a 4690k) and dominator platinum ram which doesnt give any performance improvement, the hundreds of dollars you save could go to a second graphics card, which will actually make a big difference for gaming.

Also you could get two 970s for the price of a 980 which will perform far better. The only reason to get a 980 is if you are filthy rich and are going to do triple SLI, in which case you would not be able to use six 970s.

So really you could spend less and get more performance by not buying $250 ram and a 4790k, and instead getting two 970s or two 980s.

There are also other places that you could spend that money on for more benefit, such as better monitors or more SSD storage.

Some people do not want to deal with sli issues like micro stuttering, driver instability and extra heat output. I would suggest getting cheaper ram 8gb and get an ssd boot drive

@Enderman @jnmbhj

Well I do have a ssd. Samsung 840 evo 500gb.

And as far as spending extra on the 4790k, I didn't. it was $200 at microcenter. So $180 off. And the 970 may be the best price per performance and I could've gone with sli but everyone knows that it is better to get one more powerful gpu then two less powerful gpu's and have to deal with games that do not support sli. And you have to admit, dominator platinums are sexy :)

Also spending it on better monitors? The benq xl2420z is one of the best 144hz tn panel monitors on the market. And it has good colors, Watch linus' review

Actually if you watch linus's videos you would know that he said "in most cases one more powerful GPU is better than two less powerful ones"

"in most cases"

He specifically said when talking about the 970 that this is not one of those cases, and that two 970s is a much better choice since two perform far better than a 980 yet they cost the same.

And I guess your other parts are justified if you got them on sale. So it seems like this isnt a gaming PC, but more of a workstation+aesthetics gaming PC.

Yes the 970 will perform much better but with a higher power usage and more heat. More problems with SLI. And yes it IS a gaming PC (an over kill gaming PC but a gaming pc never the less)
