Complete Audio Solution- Around $300

canadianultra

Hello, I currently have a Steel-series 7H

I am looking to upgrade my audio

I am thinking a decent set of headphones with a modmic

does anyone have any idea what headphones I should get? Do I need an amp/dac?

I would prefer if it was easy to get in Canada

It depends on what kind of sound signature you're looking for. There's the HE-400 which is bass bliss, the HD-600/650 which is mid bliss, and the DT880 which is treble bliss. Obviously, it's not that simple, but you get the idea. All of those require an amp and benefit from a dac. With a good amp around $100, you're going over your budget, but you can dodge that by getting the headphones used. The aforementioned ones can usually be found on eBay or the headfi.org sales section for about $200. Couple that with a Magni amp and you're good to go. I'm not factoring in the modmic. Don't know the price of it, but if you need to cut some corners get a used Magni and you should be set.

AKG k612 + syba dac & amp / fiio e10k + modmic

My recommendation.  The k612 are extremely comfortable and have a good balance between bass, mids, treble.

If you want a cheaper but still effective setup, you could opt for the K7XX. It's supposed to be this limited edition new headphone that's going to start sale on Black Friday. It's the successor of the renowned K701/2. This one is limited edition though, with only 6000(?) units or something like that being sold. The standard version will come later. You can opt for that and it would work well.

The K702 already has an anniversary edition so.... what?

Edit: Oh, Lays found what you're talking about: http://www.head-fi.org/t/743280/new-release-the-k7xx-massdrop-first-edition-an-exclusive-from-massdrop-and-akg

Matched drivers + 3dB bass increase, looks promising.
