Should I buy a PS4 This Black Friday?

JoshK

So I saw the PS4 GTA:V and Last of Us bundle at wal-mart for $399 for this black friday. I literally havent played on a console in literally a year  since I built my PC. Right now I have both a PS3 and a 360 which neither of them I actually use except for the PS3 for Netflix etc. The reason I want a PS4 is for some of the console exclusives, Playstation exclusives and because literally not a single one of my friends plays on PC so I would like to be able to play with my friends. Also I would like it for entertainment reasons. None of my friends have a PC like I said so when I have them over there is literally nothing to do. I would like to be able to pick up a console controller with my friend and play a couple matches of COD or GTA:V or whatever else. Im just afraid my money would be a waste and I would be afraid I would never use the thing except for when people come over. Should I break down and buy one for the heck of it?

If you'd like a PS4, get one. You're forced (obviously) to get one for console exclusives, but you've got to evaluate how much they're worth to you. Have you thought about buying parts for a low-end gaming PC this Black Friday which you could also use for media which could be utilised for mini 2-person LAN parties. Beware the hate from the PC Master Race!

Sure. I'm personally using mine a lot, and when Bloodborne comes out next March (the next Souls game), I'll be on it 24/7 for probably weeks.

Oh, and Last of Us is a great game.

I recommend getting a console because the pc version of the games aren't that much better anymore. The new consoles have handicapped the pc in a horrible way. I have a beast rig and get extremely annoyed watching graphics comparison videos showing ps4 Xbox one and pc ultra settings. The difference in games like Dragon age and a few others are nearly nothing. I have an Xbox one because I like to plug my cable box into it and use it as a blu Ray player. It's sweet snapping twitch or football while playing games. I highly recommend either new console as the ps4 is similar but more powerful. I bought one and returned it at launch because having both wasn't worth it yet as there weren't many exclusives at launch and really still aren't for either console. In another year I might pick up a ps4, hopefully by that time the exclusives will be nuts.

I have and since I have a leftover GPU CPU and PSU it would come out to around 300-400. The reason for not doingn that is my friends literally don't know how to play on PC. They don't know the controls and they would suck terribly.

I use my PS4 to play Fifa with my flatmates and for Netflix, BBC Iplayer, Lovefilm etc. It works well as a media machine, it's quick and snappy too.

It's a convenient thing to have under your television, but if it weren't under mine I don't think it'd get much use on my desk. Then again, I don't really play much stuff online, so that's not a big pull-factor for me.

Think what you're seeing at the moment with texture quality comparisons is that the consoles are actually in the same league as PC, for texture details. X1/PS4/PC, the high end maybe ultra are all around the 3GB of VRAM. The consoles have enough RAM for this but that is pushing the upper limit of many PC GPUs have, so PC games aren't really going to support any more details beyond bonus downloadable texture packs for a while. When +3GB becomes a much larger segment of the PC hardware break down, you'll see PC texture details pull away from the consoles again.

to the OP.

Really is hard to say, there are now a decent amount of games to play of the PS4, with a good list coming in 2015. You are getting 2 pretty damn good games with the machine.

Even the worst PC ports I can imagine were still a more enjoyable and flexible experience than the console versions. Who cares if they look the same, if the console version is locked to 30 FPS and doesn't give you any tweaking options? Then there's the issue of mouse and keyboard being superior to a controller in many games that don't benefit from analog controls.

I'm thinking about buying one for Black Friday as well. My only console that I own is a Halo 4 Edition 360, for the sole purpose of playing Halo lol... I do miss the simplicity of gaming on a console sometimes, especially when we are playing multiplayer with friends. I hate when I have to optimize my settings on my TV when my friends are just waiting there to play. It's not a good look for PC in their eyes, but to mine, I don't game at less than 60 FPS, they don't understand lol. But either way, it's only around $400 and hopefully it will last for years.

PS The wife wants to play Little Big Planet, so I'm in the process of convincing her that SHE wants the PS4!
