Planetside 2 Dev Confirms PS4 CPU Is A Bottleneck

BiG StroOnZ

With this FULLY in MIND.

Would then a better API be of more use in such a situation...?

The Equivalent to DX12/Mantle for less burden on the CPU-time needed.

Few months worth of coding to get results, less than 12 months to port code into a better API.

Better API and multi-core support. MMOs that appear on the desktop usually suck at multi-core support, so CPUs with higher single-core performance will shine. If MMO games (and by extensive, the game engine) can take advantage of multiple cores, we'll hopefully see better performance in MMOs.

My response when the devs said 1080P 60fps ultra PS2 in PS4 was to ROFL the hell out.

The game is simply unoptimized with AMD.

I can get 45-50 fps with zerg rushes but the settings are modified with shadow off (which is the biggest CPU eater IGN)

Please, I get 8-16 Fps in the 200 people dome battles because CPU bottlenecks.

There is literally no way that that 30 Fps thing is gonna be solid on a console.

Edit: Render distance at the maximum 6000 Meters

Very high almost ultra settings.

I get around 30fps during Huge battles in PlanetSide 2 on Ultra. I get around 40-60 anywhere else. Not sure if thats just my AMD. Might be an improvement if I had Intel.

Well seeing as you have a gtx 970.....what else could it be if not your cpu?

On PS2, a trick to help FPS on your system is to unpark your CPU cores, turn settings to "high", turn shadows off (or low for if you absolutely need shadows but a bit lower FPS), flora off, render quality down to 93%.

Memory leaks are a pain in the ass though, have to restart your game every hour or two.

On topic, yeah the game is hugely CPU dependent. I do tend to have 100 FPS in smaller fights, then drops to 40-60 in the larger ones with an i5 and 970.

Don't know why this is a surprise.

PS4 = 1.6 ghz 8 core AMD, but...

Only 6 cores are available on the SDK, 2 are reserved to the OS, and the PS4 has the wrong ram for CPU (loose latency GDDR5).

Both consoles are flawed. Xbox One on GPU, PS4 on CPU.

CPU development has moved down the path of parallel processing which makes things difficult for regularity of "real-time" AKA "sequential" data flow...

What Sony needs is a quantum turing machine...the ultimate single thread processor...

Every little performance gain available from associated hardware is important in this game... have the dev's coded to take advantage of Creative X-Fi's XRAM?

A refreshing splash of open honesty, who'd have thunk it :P

Though they didn't go quite as far and say the CPUs are bad, just they are having issues with managing all the pressure being put on the CPU, which other people have pointed out even i7 grade CPUs have issues with.

We’re still trying to shoot for 60fps. We’re trying to get a solid frame-rateSo if we go to 30 it’ll be because we want to maintain a completely solid 30fps.

For the first time in a while, this is actually the correct PR response when locking a game to 30.  I certainly prefer 60 fps, but at least this time it is not the developer saying "we have deiced that 30 fps is a better cinematic experience, and we've made this decision for you, forcefully."

PS2 has always been a CPU intensive game. Also the framerate thing is understandable due to the way televisions work at basically a fixed 60hz refresh rate. At least they aren't lying and packaging it as "because it's more cinematic." They admit it's because the hardware isn't up to snuff, though honestly I'd prefer 60 fps and less graphical fidelity but its their call.

They just said its not a GPU thing. Graphics and frame rate are separate here.
