You can't really get better audio quality at a lower price, within a reasonable price range.

Although, from what i've heard, the ATH-M40x are a good, cheaper alternative to the M50x's. They are not superior audio quality wise, but are definatley an alternative.

What is your actual budget, or what is the most you are willing to spend? It'd help trying to find you suggestions if me/anyone else reading this knows how much you can/will spend.

the sony mdr 7506 or the v6 can be had pretty cheap better mids than the m50 but at a the cost of a bit of bass response.

bose and jbl have yet to make a headphone that I'd regard as good beside the noise cancelling qc from bose.

I find my SRH440 to be better than M50s, and cost less (especially here in Norway were nothing good is on sale ever). Especially with 840 pads. I have reviews of both in my signature.

Sony MDR-7506 and v6 are supposedly also great.

I personally think CHC Silverados are more enjoyable to listen to, but not everyone's going to feel that way, and they're certainly not objectively better sounding.

Solid statement brah. They will work just fine, though the M40x is a better buy than the M50x.

As an owner of both, there isnt much of a difference. They maybe sound a little bit different, but not worth the price difference

Afaik, the M50x come with a 3rd cable (1.2m or so), the M40x only with 2. Another difference is the swivel-mechanism on the ear cups: the M40x rotate only 90° in one direction (to the front), while the M50x rotate 180° (front and back). The M40x are also a bit lighter. (and the silver ring on the outside of the ear cups is bigger on the M50x)

I like my M40x, especially for Rock music, because they have more oomph on the bass (in comparison to, let's say the AKG K601). No need for a portable AMP, they work just fine with phones/mp3-players because they only have 35 Ohm impedance.

They were a bit uncomfortable at first (right after I got them) because the clamp force was too strong, so I set them on box of CDs and let them "stretch" (the box was a bit slimmer than a human head) for a few hours. Since then I can wear them 5-7 hours with only mild pain.

Care to elaborate?

He is poking fun at the statement. If something causes you any amount of pain, mild or not, I would be inclined to quote. "Doctor! Doctor! It hurts when I do this."

MIght've been better to use a different terminology. "pain" is a bit exagerated, it's more a "discomfort", but what headphones will not feel a bit uncomfortable after wearing them 1/4 day without a break? Yes, there are more comfortable headphones out there (I happen to have the AKG K601 right now for testing, which are nicer to wear - velour ear pads, less clamp force), but I wouldn't call the M40x uncomfortable, as long as I make occasional breaks and take them off for a few minutes. After all, they are closed headphones.

If you can try them in a store. I like the bass of the M40x much more than of the K601, to me it sounds more "punchy" and full (might be a bit due to the fact that the K601 are semi-open, while the M40x are closed), for others it might be too much. I might not be the best person to describe the sound signature of headphones since I only got recently more interested in audio myself, so someone else who's more experienced will be able to describe them better (regarding terminology and experience/trained ears).

I just got a pair of ATH-M50x, they were on sale for 163$(great price for Romania). I listen with them via note 3 or an asus xonar u7 for my laptop and I can say that they are the best headphones I ever listened to. They really are worthy of the price.
