No Signal on Monitor When Boot/Reboot

SnorLax_Dai

Hello, I recently built up my PC following Linus's 4K build guide. The PC works fine most time. However, there are some times when I boot, usually reboot my PC, after the POST, the monitor shows that there is no signal but the Q-code on my Asus Rampage V Extreme motherboard shows as "AA", which is the same as normal. I have to use the reset button on the front panel for one or two times to boot my PC. Here are my configurations:

motherboard: Asus Rampage V Extreme

processor: Intel i7-5820

RAM: G.Skill DDR4 16G

GPU: dual MSI GTX 980

PSU: Cosair ATX 860i

monitor: Asus PB287Q (displayport 1.2)

I have tried to re-install my GPU but it did not help much. Could anyone tell me which part of my PC might be wrong and how should I solve this problem? Thanks a lot.

How far does it get? does it post than hang or no post at all.

Sounds like a GPU driver

it is after the POST. I can see the Asus POST figure. Then after that the monitor shows there is no signal. All components seem to work just fine. The PC could final boot normally by using the reset button on the front panel. Sometimes it may need to using the reset button more than once to boot the PC.

The ASUS post figure is called a splash screen. So before the windows logo starts to show it turns black?

That is typical of a resolution problem or not supported by your monitor. Try F8 safe mode. Try a different monitor/ cable / adapter

When windows is loading its changing the resolution that your monitor cannot support

Yeah, after the splash screen and before windows login my monitor turns black. I'm using the displayport cable and set it as DP1.2. The monitor resolution is set as recommended,  3840*2160, 60 Hz.

There is another thing I just found. During the booting process, one of the Q LEDs on the motherboard, which corresponds to VGA card, would turn on for a little while and then turns off. According to Asus motherboard manual, "Q LEDs check key components (CPU, DRAM, VGA card, and boot devices) in sequence during motherboard booting process. If an error is found, the corresponding LED will continue lighting until the problem is solved." Usually, the LED corresponding to VGA card would turn on at the beginning of booting and turn off before the splash screen. Would this imply anything? I hope it's not saying that my VGA cards have some big problem. Besides, I've tried switching my two VGA cards, they can't both break down, right?

no that implies nothing the led will turn on every time you boot. Trying anohter monitor is a save bet just to see weather that might be the problem. maybe try swaping the gpus and plug into the ohter one then might be a connector problem as well.

I had a similar problem like this yesterday. And the problem was because I plug in my monitor to the motherboard with my GPU installed. I know it sounds crazy - but try checking to see you don't have your monitor cable plug into the motherboard. And make sure it's plugged into the GPU. Also check to see if the cable ports are correct and you didn't force anything.

Hi there. I tried to connect my monitor using the HDMI port and the PC seems to work totally fine with it. However, when I use the displayport, the problem came back. I got three displayport sockets on my VGA card and the problem remains no matter which one I am using. Would this mean something wrong with the plug on the monitor or with the cable itself? If it is the case, then how could it explain that my PC can work normally sometimes? Would any monitor or OS settings cause this problem? I mean. is there any particular settings for 4K monitor with displayport? By the way, my OS is win 8.1 64-bit.

no you only have to run the monitor in 1.2 mode. I would try a different cable

I have tried a different cable today and it did not do much good. In fact, the situation got worse with the new cable. It's driving me mad.

Hello guys. It turns out to be the GPU driver that causes this issue. Nvidia released a Hotfix driver 344.80 last week which addresses the following issues:

GeForce GTX 980 displays texture shimmering when Texture Filtering Quality set to High Quality.
GPU outputs fuzzy lines over DisplayPort after a period of time following driver updates.
System hang up and black screen after power on with some monitors (DP1.2 & 4K/60Hz) + GTX980.
For people who use displayport and GTX970/980 as I do, please refer to Nvidia website for the above driver. It may help you out. I'll put the link here:
