I saw this while i was looking thought cheap stuff on amazon and have never seen it before and realized its actually not a bad idea id you have a 5.25" bay that is empty an want to do something with it :P maybe good place to put all your memory card/usb drives.

 

anyways just though i show it since i have not really though of using a 5.25" bay like that

Some people may not have drawers on their desk, like myself; like the OP mentioned this would could in handy for me to store cables in.

Well I don't have 5.25" bays, so that's useless. But I'd still reckon a small ikea chest of drawers or one of those ikea desk tidies would be better. more space, plus it's most likely more convenient. It's not a bad idea though, if you really wanted to do something like that, instead of using an optical drive as a cup holder...

HDD cooling box, makes seeking and spinning noises quieter.

Hm if manufactorys would start shipping usb thumbs instead dvd's maybe more people would get rid of 5,25 cases. Really 5,25 is ancient.
