Can you post some screenshots of your drive list?

Also go to the Disk Defragment and see if it's there

Because he had a hard drive.

You could try going into Device Manager, and uninstalling the driver. Then, it should reinstall a fresh driver.

After that, click the start button and right click on "My Computer". Click "Manage". Now, click storage, and click disc management. It should show up as unpartitioned, simply right click on it and create a new volume. Hope I could help..

If it doesn't work when you delete and have it reinstall the drivers, and doesnt show up after, it may be shot. Creating the new volume is taking part of the hdd and dedicating all of it or some of it to a certain label.

There's not much you can do about it. And I'm not sure how you could make sure, this is pretty textbook. You could send it in to a recovery shop, but that'd be incredibly expensive.
