R9 290 and VGA Monitors

c00face

Purchased a R9 290. I don't have a DVI Port Monitor, instead I have a VGA port Monitor.

Will a R9 290 work with a "DVI-i to VGA adapter" or any Dvi-i to VGA cables?

No, they are all-digital outputs

Edit : buy an active adapter if you can, that should work , when you get the money upgrade your monitor dude, you'll see much better quality =)

DVI-A is Analog, DVI-D is Digital, DVI-I is both Digital and Analog, VGA is Analog.

All you would need is a DVI-I to VGA cable or adapter, no active adapter needed unless going from DVI-D to VGA.

R9 290 is dual DVI-D (+ HDMI and DP). No DVI-I.

Ugh I don't like this. There's still an awful lot of legacy tech that I have to use that doesn't support anything but VGA (projectors and such usually). As much as you guys might wish it weren't still a standard, it is and it's jarring to lose compatibility for no real reason.

Then I'd suggest he just gets better monitors.

But if he can't then an active adapter is the way to go.
