1080p, 1440p or 4k?

BambiBoy

Hi,

I want a new monitor, but I don´t know which resolution I should get to be prepared for the future. I want to have a surround setup for the future and I will look into buying the first of three monitors now or in the nearest future. My main requirements are a thin bezel, IPS screen and not too costly. The question I got at the moment is whether I should get a 1080p monitor, or a 1440p or 4k monitor. At the moment I look into the Eizo Foris FS2434, which at the moment is the only monitor that meets my requirements. I am not in a rush so can wait several months if it means I can get a monitor I  will be pleased with.

Most, but not all, 4K monitors use TN panels. Just keep that in mind. ;)

Keep in mind, for a 1440p or even 4k sorround gaming system you'll need a beefy Computer, My choice would be 1080p, because they still are very good, kinda cheap and easy to drive.

1080p, i see you have an asus 770 on your profile, it's a nice card, but looking quickly at some benchs, it doesn't reach 60fps on games like bioshock infinite, crysis 3, doesn't evne reach 40fps on bf4 ultra 4xAA, reaches avg 44fps on FC3.

So i'd say go with 1080p, a 770 is not enough for 1440p unless you don't mind lowering your settings, but personally, i'd rather max out a game on 1080p, than play it with almost non filters and maybe not in ultra on 1440p.

If you'd like that surround feel while playing a game you can opt for a 21:9 1080p monitor.

Well, I think 1440p would be best. I'm also presuming that you'll be upgrading your rig and not trying to use a single 770.

-4k pretty much only uses TN panels and are still pretty damn expensive.

-1440p is harder to run that 1080p, but it looks better, while still not being batshit insane difficult to power, plus, you can get 144hz panels here as well, which I think would be worth the IPS tradeoff.
-1080p is easy to power and you can get decent priced IPS or 144hz panels, however they do have the lowest pixel density and can be annoying because of that.

Thank you for every response. I got some comments.

1. I don´t play games at the moment as school is taking a lot of time, so I don´t have a GPU anymore. I had a 770, sold it and got a 780 before I sold that one too. That doesn´t say the purpose of this upgrade is to have a bad ass surround gaming setup I can´t game on. I will look into GPUs in the future, but I don´t want to waste money on a GPU I don´t utilize to its fully potential.

2. I want IPS so I can do som video and photo editing on my spare time. So 4k tn is not an option.

3. Resolution was only a factor as I don´t know what direction the monitors are heading. Will 1080p still be relevant for the next 5 years, or will it be better to wait for a better 4k monitor. 1440p is here because it is like something in the middle of the two.

4. Budget is not set, this is a future project I will do in the hopefully nearest future, but I am not rushing any purchases or decisions.

Well yeah, some games don't vary so much in terms of max quality or just high, like crysis 3, but games like far cry change a lot the more filters you add and the better quality, so yeah.

I challenge you to play any game of your choice at 30fps for a whole day and see if you can stand it. :)

If there's money on the line i will, but there's no way i can play at 30fps, i'd die.

Okay, take $100 out of your wallet, place it on your desk, if you do it then you can put the

$100 back in your wallet, if you don't, you have to give it to a person of your choice. Deal? :D
