Play PS4 games on the PC?

Hey everyone,

I just had an idea I wanted to share. I read that the PS4's HDD will be removable and replaceable, and the console is x86 based. This led me to the conclusion that we may be able to dualboot PCs with the PS4's OS.

There will probably be something stopping it from booting when it isn't running in the PS4, but I'm sure this will eventually be circumvented in a similar manner to hackintoshing. Of course, this is speculation on my part, but it would be pretty cool to play PS4 "exclusives" with a GTX 780.

    Any thoughts?

Very interesting idea but I'm sure there will be lists of ways that Sony would be preventing this. I mean I guess you are right, some peeps could come up with a way to effectivly run the PS4 on the PC though performance wise who knows?

Really good point though mate, and I'll be happy to go for it. It would ruin the PS4 though but I doubt that most PC enthusiatsts would even bother buying a PS4 in the first place.

Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?

There are people theory crafting already that emulators for the new consoles will be up just months after release due to lack of unique architecture...let's secretly hope so ^_^

It's just that we PC enthusiasts want to play those exclusive games really badly, (The Division ffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu).

You know, last gen I would agree, but GT fell on it's face as has FF the past TWO gens imo. Square as a company is the result of a talent drain, and they'll just slap fancy visuals with a big ad campaign to disguise the fact that the creative forces behind their biggest titles left long ago. That said, I would seriously consider buying a console for Rockstar games.

Oh yeah and GTA 5 ofc which will hopefully not be just a shoddy port a year down the line.

About FF, last one I personally liked and played was 10. 12 was ruined and 13, though my mate says is quite good I've heard it's pretty crap and horrid. GT was epic on the ps1/ps2 though but yeah I agree mate, a lot of the new games in most series have kinda lacked.

13 isn't that bad, it's just very very linear, which is a tad annoying.

You know, I probably enjoyed 13 more than the other entries since 7 and 9. The biggest problem was that you couldn't grind until the last portion of the game, which gave the feel that you just played a 25-30 hour tutorial for the last boss fight, haha. I think the title of JonTron's video summed it up best (Endless Hallway 13).

The other thing is, it would be great if you could replace the PS4 HDD with an SSD. It would dramatically speed up boot and load times. Once you've replaced the hard drive, how would you copy over the OS + games? The "cloud" could do some of the work, but you would probably need to clone the drive.

If that is so, I'd bet that there would be an iso image leaked to the internet within a week of the console launch. Even better, once third parties can access the OS, we might even get some emulators for PS3. I know the architecture change is a problem, but determined modders can often do things that big companies can't or won't.

Think about how fast people were able to make Hackintoshs. Apple made it kinda difficult to install their OS on a PC but people were able to make a bootloader in no time. I might be possible since you can install a bluray drive in your rig and play games offline.

Sounds completely possible.

Just to chime in on this conversation.  The ability to turn a PC into a PS4, imo is very unlikely (and wouldn't be achievable for quite some time).  Remember games are optimized for the hardware, and although the hardware is based off of existing/future hardware, there are key modifications.  The best example is the ps4 has GPU powered physics.  With the GPU and CPU being on the same die they can also communicate a lot faster, so it wouldn't surprise me if it took years (10 years imo) before you start seeing the emulators for PS4 and xbox one.

Nvidia "Maxwell" will have an integrated ARM cpu... So I wonder how this would do with a integrated CPU specifically for the GPU on the GPU. Maxwell should bring great things to the table and its only a year away. I foresee it as a big game-changer in the graphics industry. Now if PCI-E SSD's were more affordable things would be so kickass on PC..

About the emulators, that was just speculation, so it might take a while. As far as performance goes, I don't think it will be a problem since we can throw so much more horsepower at the problem. The 8GB of GDDR5 is a big benefit to the console, but how many games are bottlenecked by things like that vs. raw graphical power?

With Playstation starting to push for cloud services. It is possible in the future that you will be able to play all the playstation games on your PC through streaming off your PS4 or the server. Unless you're opposed to that and want to run everything on your own hardware then that route might eventually be plausible.

They say'd could stream to tablets smartphones for example to play ps4 games on that probably will work on pc also.

kindy like onlive.

Now, that'll be so cool. But, I think not every game, though. Just casual ones and probably some hardcore ones.

It would be cool if Sony and Microsoft sold their os, at whatever price it is to package, becuase as most people know, they make barely any profit from the consoles themselves. Most of the profit comes from games and by allowing people who dont like consoles because they are underpowered to run their games on their own high end systems, maybe more money could be made?

Even if it were possible, a native console game isn't going to just immediately run better on faster hardware like a PC game would.

Console games are generally built from the ground up with a certain framerate in mind, generally with a hard lock. They may even have game logic (AI, physics, etc.) that only updates every 1/30th or 1/60th of a second, since they know they have absolute control over the framerate. Once in awhile that makes it over to really poor PC ports, like Need For Speed Rivals.

This statement is false. The gpu and cpu are completely seperate die. There is no way to fit 1,000 shader cores into a cpu die. As said before the specs are X86 based. Which means they sre also using desktop based graphics cards. Plus specs reveal AMD based hardware. So theroetically if we load same drivers or similar hardware on a pc, Or adaped drivers, we should actually be able to run the PS4 on a PC. A problem i can see is that specific drivers may be needed to function, and also, the OS may need to adapt to higher spec systems. So some modifications may be required. For example, my laptop has 1300 shader cores, all are a little larger and more powerful, but PS4 has 1100 slightly smaller and lesser powerful shader cores. (2.6Tflops vs 1.8Tflops) The PS4 may not know how to use this extra amount of horsepower. And may crash the system, or simply not use it. I would love it if we could adapt the system to actually use the extra horsepower. It would make PC enthusiasts much more willing to play. I think Sony would make a lot of money selling the OS to people, mostly PC enthusiasts, who think they want a better experience than what the PS4 already offers. Id love to be able to play games with my friends ps4s, and have a rig that gives me much better graphics, and less lag.

It could be pretty cool but i think you need same hardware with ps4 so drivers would not be problem but you cant sony won't send you partlist or anything like that.
