Seemingly low PPD on R7 graphics in Ubuntu

I've recently gotten into folding. The CPU part of my APU manages about 1900 PPD whick seems reasonable, but the GPU part only does 1700. Surely, it should be more than that.

CPU is overclocked to 4.2 GHz, GPU is overclocked to 1107 MHz.

OS is Kubuntu (for all intents and purposes identical to Ubuntu here), running the proprietary Catalyst driver from fglrx-updates.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it a driver issue or is that normal?

Update: I've deleted the GPU slot and now the CPU slot's PPD has jumped from 2000 to 5000. I think it's reasonable to assume the machine was executing OpenCL code on the CPU, but why though? I don't understand what's going on.

It might have been throttling when using both the CPU and GPU. What APU is it and what is your cooling?

It's an A10 7850K. Cooling is not an issue: I have a Hyper212 with quite an agressive fan curve on it with full speed at 50°C. It never reached that the last few days as the ambient temp is actually quite cold here. As of now I think something is missing to make the GPU do anything OpenCL but I'm not sure what.

Throttling doesn't seem to be the issue then. I can't really help you further, don't fold myself so I don't really know anything about configuring your client etc

That's alright, mate. You tried. Maybe it just can't be done on Linux with the current Catalyst drivers.

Thanks, mate. Reading around on that forum points to AMD GPUs simply not being supported yet for folding on Linux. Not sure if others have gotten it to work yet, but I think I'll just wait it out a bit until these issues are resolved and do CPU only, for now.

one cpu core was likely reserved for gpu folding, and once you removed the gpu slot, the cpu core was freed up for cpu folding (and maybe then the gpu assists a little with openCL for the cpu folding, to bring the score from 2000 up to 5000?).

The CPU slot was likely held back because the OpenCL code that was supposed to be executed on the GPU appeared to be done on the CPU also. Apparently AMD's Catalyst drivers for Linux don't yet support acceleration for all the OpenCL functions necessary for folding.

gotcha, I was referring to what normally happens with a gpu slot with fold@home.
