Video Technology Can Interpret Emotions and Predict Behaviors

New technology, like the one seen in “Minority Report” will soon be available on smartphones. The new program is called Spirit and it can recognize what the eye is looking at. It can tell how people are walking, what they are wearing and even what mood they are in.

The data gathered by Spirit will also be able to predict a person's decision in the future. Eventually Apical wants to design Spirit to detect and interpret a persons' mood and behavior. Whether a person is at the store trying to buy a shirt, or they are at a concert looking for their friends, Spirit will be able to assist.

Hmm. While slightly creepy, I do actually find the technology behind this quite interesting. It works by taking the video input and making a 3D model of the environment and people in it. Based on the data gathered, the 3D model is then given statistical data, such as what directions your eyes are glancing in, your facial expression, body position,  the direction you are walking, how long you looked at a advert you saw for that new phone you wanted, ad nauseam.

 

Using this information, the model can make predictions about a person's behavior. Quite frankly, the CEO put it best : "This is the Google Analytics for the real world."

 

Personally, I think it might be a little too intrusive for advertising, but I can see possible use cases, like photography, where an camera could automatically 'tag' the people in a picture. Or it could be used in the security sector as well, but in my opinion, that may be a gray area.

I would not like to see this technology for commercial use, it would be useful to deter breakins at parking lots.
