HDD Space problem

Verrucosus

Hi,

I am looking to upgrade to an SSD in the near future. So i was looking at what size of SSD i would need to clone over the main files (All excluding steam apps).

"My Computer" says i have used about 410GB, but as i ran WinDerStat, it showed that that i have only used 213GB (Including steam apps n(132GB)).

Is there any reason to this and when i clone my files over to an SSD, will i need a 512GB SSD or only a 128GB SSD?

Your help will be much appreciated :)

In WinDirStat, you may have lots of unknown files that are not shown and thus under reporting the actual used space. Go to "Options" > "Show unknown files", or press the F7 shortcut. You might want to check out my favorite disk size analyzer, TreeSize(Free), it is small and simple.

If you really are doing a exact clone of C drive, 410GB (used) - 132GB (steam) = 276GB. So after formatting, at least a 300GB SSD will be needed.

I assume you are planning to move to a SSD for the boot drive and your 1 TB as the storage drive. It really depends on what programs you want installed on the SSD. Personally, I install large, rarely used programs to my storage HDD which allows me to get away with using a 240GB SSD. So that's something you may consider.
