DT770 PRO vs DT990 PRO vs Custom One Pro

XzzDSA

Heyo o/

So I've narrowed my headphone choice down to these three:

DT770 PRO (closed back)

I've tried these in a store and I really like the build, look and comfort. Some of the most comfort headphones I've ever tried, really nice with the valor cups. The have a v-shaped response curve where the bass is a bit too overpowering compared to the mids, the highs are fine. Overall I like these, they sound good.

Impedance: 80ohm

DT990 PRO (open back)

Pretty much identical to the DT770s, except they have a flatter response curve. The mids do sound a tiny bit high to me compared to the lows and highs, but overall sound really good and these I prefere out of the two.

Impedance: 250ohm

Custom One Pro (closed back)

So these I have listed for a few reasons, first they are closed back which I will prefere as I'm looking to get a versatile pair of headphones that I can use for great sound and comfort at my desk AND when traveling.
They have a bass-port on each cup which can be adjusted a fair bit though I'm not sure how much influence this actually has on the sound. I have NOT tried these, but the store have them and I'm going to try them before I make a purchase.
Another reason I am considering these are for the low impedance.

Impedance: 16ohm

I'm leaning towards a closed back pair of headphones as they will be more versatile than the open back. I can use them on a plane with worrying about the rest of passengers listening in on my music.

I will be using the headphones with a ModMic 4 so a closed back will probably make it easier to mount as well.

Though I have a little knowledge about audio, not near enough to judge if I can even drive headphones at 80ohms or higher, comfortably. I'm going to use these headphones mainly on my desktop where I'm rocking onboard audio from an ASUS Rampage III Extreme. Not sure how much this solution is able to drive, and my guess is not whole lot.
(I'm not going to get an external audio solution for my desktop for PRACTICAL reasons).

I'm also going to use these however with my iPhone 5 for whenever I'm traveling. I've read in an article which tested the iPhone 5 audio solution and concluded that it was able to even drive 200ohm+ headphones. They were testing DT880 PROs and mentioned they sounded fine, not sure of the credibility but if you want I can dig up the article again.

Lastly, I'm buying these in a store called 4sound. They are all within the same price range of aprox. 180$

Thoughts?

UPDATE:

So I've changed my preference a bit..
I've come to the conclusion that If I get a small enough amp/dac unit that can drive the dt990s properbly, for not too steep of a price, I'll go with that.

Then later I'll get some custom one pros for travel.

What sort of amp/dac should I be looking for?

Everyone have a cool signature. I don't, so I thought I would write something.

- Cool right?

Dt770 are closed, and the custom one pro would be better for portable use IMO, although I'm fairly sure the 770's probably sound better.

Another option would be Dt990 / 880 for home use, and a pair of earphones for portable use like the v sonic vsd3.

First off- DT770's are closed, and available in 32, 80, 250 and there's an older variant which was 600 ohm as well I think.

Custom One Pro's are 16 ohm, not 32. the bass port actually do have a sort of big impact, at least they did when I tried them back in May or so this year.

And then- what Lays said. If you don't need isolation in your headphones at home, an open pair for the home will most likely be very pleasing, as open headphones tend to sound a little more natural, and have less of a fatiguing effect on you, at least in my experience. And in-ears are so much nicer for travelling, as headphones can be quite annoying to drag around, while in-ears can just go right in the pocket and off you go. I recommend the DT990's although they might need an amp, depending on how loud you want them to get. There are also 32 and 80 ohm versions, but they might not be available at your 4sound store, and they do sound slightly different. for in-ears, I liked my JBL J33's, review in signature.

Right I have obviously been sleeping when writing this.
Not sure why I think the dt770s are open back, and not sure where I got the 32ohm from on the custom one pros..

Anyways, I won't be getting in-ear, that's a personal preference.

I might end up going with something like the dt990s for home usage. And maybe another set for traveling. DT770s or the custom one pros.
Might not be a bad solution as my current pair (A50s from ASTRO) are pretty much double the price and not very comfortable to me.

I might need to talk to someone in the store about the impedence of the dt990s. If I was sure my devices could drive them, I would choose those right away, but I'm just not confident that they can.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/iphone-5/audio-quality.htm

Some tests of electronic signals through the iPhone 5 when driving 600 ohm headphones, aswell as 32ohm and all sorts of other stuff I do not understand. Any thought on how well I'll be able to drive 250ohm headphones with onboard/iPhone?

The amount of ohms is just a part of the story. To stay on the same SPL: when doubling impedance, you need +3db sensitivity.

At least, that's the case with speakers. Not sure if there are any other factors to be considered with headphones.

btw, proper Boominator still on the to-do list? ;p

interested to know about the sound stage and directional audio of the dt770 pros, but really looking towards the 250 ohm versions only, for a flatter sound curve.. the sound stage and directional audio is pretty key for me as they will be for gaming and music.

For portable headphones, I prefer the Sony MDR 1R over the COP. There's also a new version, the MDR1A but haven't heard anything about it yet. DT770/DT990 are better for home use.

You might be able to get by with 250 ohm variants on you PC, but highly unlikely any portable device will make them loud enough. 80 ohm DT770 will check all your boxes even if it isn't the absolute best for every situation. Plan on getting some non-Beyerdynamic cans for those situations in the future so you can mix up your collection. It's boring having one sound for every purpose.

Yeah, that's the one I've been looking into getting.

the custom one pros are quite flexible and should suit you

I have evolved my oppinion a bit the last week and I think I will stick with a pair of comfortable, open-back headphones like the DT990s for now.

The whole transport thing is moslty an extra for when I'm traveling long distance - but I WILL be getting a pair for that purpose in the future, just not sure which just yet.

And maybe as you are saying @ShearMe I'll get a pair of a different brand.
