Who here eats out of date foods?

Tacitus

So I  just got thinking, I'm eating a pork pie that had use by 17th Nov. It's alright I reckon, it's pretty big and tasty so I want it!

Do you eat out of date foodstuffs?

It's 2 days old. It's not like it's gonna rot or something, chances are that it's fine.

Maybe a can of soup (without meat)

Nothing related to meat though. I've had a hospitalization and sickness from meats before so I stick within their dates.

Lol, it's not like at one minute before midnight it was fine and one minute after midnight it was bad...

Shocked at how few will eat fruit/veg after date.

Alphabet soup or Kraft Dinner in a can? Sure why not, I'll eat it weeks if not months after it expires.

Milk? I wouldn't touch it 30 seconds after it expires.

Depending on the food, I'll eat most if not too far beyond expiry date. Your senses (smell, taste, sight) will give you a pretty good indication if the food is still edible.

Food doesn't magically turn unsafe the moment it passes its due date, and best before is merely suggesting the optimal consumption period.

Meat lasts a long time (hopfully for obvious reasons) if put if the freezer.

expiration dates have no mathematical thing to say this is going to be bad on this day. they are just guesses.. usually really far off guesses

It smells bad I don't eat it. If its diary or sandwich meat I wont touch it if its a few days old. If the tomato is super squishy - yea not happening. For each different food item I have a different tolerance for.

Any animal products/by-products: absolutely not

Processed foodstuffs (chips, etc): maybe if it's a few weeks over and seems okay.

I smell it and if it smells ok I eat it.

Do you know that the best before dates are sometimes faked to pretend freshness?

I don't know how your country handles this, but in Germany there are two types of expedition dates. One that gives the food a deadline and a MHD which is only a recommendation. Most stuff only has a MHD and even after a week you should be able to eat it with no problem.

best before =/= a day after best before you will get sick and die

Especially with products that have a best before date years or months after production, a few more weeks or months make absolutely no difference.

It depends on how it smells and looks. I probably wouldn't eat it if it was a few weeks expired though.

I could never eat old food, my brain tells my not to. If I do, even if taste the same I still think of it as tasting bad. Even milk that expired a day ago I cannot drink.

I go by the rule that if it smells fine and looks fine it probably won't kill me, so is fine to eat. Use by/best before dates at generally a bunch of craps anyway
