To those that have updated their Nexus 5 to Lollipop..

dizmo

Should I update my phone now, or wait a few days? I've read that there are a few issues, such as a flashlight error, problems with the cards in the open apps section, etc.

For those of you that upgraded and have a Nexus 5, how's your experience been with it thus far?

I'm tempted, as I think it'd be cool to try out the new OS, though it will probably mean that I'll have to change the whole scheme of my phone as it will no longer match the more white based system, as opposed to the darker system it replaces.

Do you lose any personal data or anything when you update? Or can I just update and everything will be exactly as I left it?

Thanks all. Never updated a phone that already has apps and files on it before. :)

I updated my Nexus 5 to Lollipop, I also have a Nexus 9. I personally love Material design and the fluid animations. If you do an OTA update, you won't lose any of your data. I haven't experienced any problems on my Nexus yet. Overall I would recommend it.

i updated my nexus 5 yesterday official OTA with no root.

D821 32GB black. Export set from Korea in singapore.

current gripes:

1.the stock gallery app now requires Google+ to even open (which i do not use and have it disabled on 4.4.4)

2.for some reason in the multitasking area if i scroll a little too fast, it stutters, always. ( it happens often since there are so many cards opened)

3.the battery usage is pretty broken. (showing wifi always on, not showing proper usage for certain things.)

4.i don't actually see the battery improvements if any. i'm on my 2nd full discharge cycle since the update. (i will continue to monitor.)

5.bluetooth for some reason is sucking up a lot more battery than 4.4.4 (almost twice as much)

6.it broke my poweramp skin (which i'm super sad about but no big deal)

7.i can't toggle data/wifi on and off with 1 button using power toggles anymore. it takes me into the settings app now. (although the new lollipop pull down toggles are pretty good)

8.why does separate areas in settings require multiple cards in multi tasking? it clogs up so much space (eg, data usage/ battery usage/ apps all have their own cards if you leave it in multitasking. convenient yes but now i have like over 20+ things in multitasking)

of course i'm not an absolute god at android and some of these might be due to my incompetence.

things i like:

1.material design is pretty good. (although most apps were already material design before updating to lollipop)

2.the animations are good, gives me a reason to run my animations at 1x now. (i previously used .5x)

3.like I mentioned previously, i like the pull down toggles in notifications.

4.i was already on ART when i was kitkat and so I don't really notice any performance improvements but at least now ART is official and I won't have to worry about apps breaking.

5.i like the new way apps RAM usage is now displayed a lot.

6.the guest account idea is pretty good, have not gotten around to trying it yet though

i have not noticed any wakelocks and wifi issues yet, except for the wifi always on in battery usage bug. (however using gsam, it shows that wifi is off and not draining battery)

so far the update has been smooth and i like the update overall. except minor kinks that made me find workarounds for them.

good thing about android is that i can always find workarounds  :)

So I updated. Best decision ever. I love the new OS, and honestly it's way better than before.

I don't even really notice the lighter skin.

I got update on Thursday night and there are some things i dont like, for example i have to drag the notification bar down twice to get to options for network, wifi, aeroplane mode etc. Pretty annoying when i have only one app running (music) and there is plenty of room for it to go all the way down.

Another thing is the way Network bar is designed. Its just a triangle with explanation mark on it when you are not connected to mobile data network.  For me this is not very intuitive because explanation mark for me means that something is wrong and i should be aware. At first i thought i had no signal or problems with signal...

Also when you are on main screen or in some apps when u drag from very edge there is that animation like you are pulling out something like a bubble (its curved and white). That is absolutely unnecessary and in my eyes pretty ugly :(

I have to say i got very hyped for this android version after watching Marques Brownlee's video talking about how awesome it is, how the animations are looking so great etc. But the animations are nowhere near what he says, at least for me. I can see very little difference when i am launching apps compared to Kit Kat.

I don't have many gripes with the new OS.

So far the only issues I've come across are;

The flashlight, when turned off, doesn't work again until a reboot is performed.

The toggle for GPS no longer has the middle step. Its either fully on, or fully off. I liked it a hell of a lot more when I could activate the low power mode without having to dive through menus.

I haven't really seen any improvements to battery life either sadly. I was really looking forward to that. If anything I'd say it's slightly worse..though I now leave WiFi on.

You can still swipe down from the top with two fingers if you want to access that menu. Pretty easy.

I didn't know about the other point though...then again, I'm never without data coverage *shrug*

There's a few alterations, like in the calculator. It's vastly different. I think the bubbles on the edges are just to denote the fact that you're at the end. So I kind of get what they've done.

The only thing I don't really like is that the flashlight gets stuck and requires a reboot of the phone.

I've enjoyed it, it's so far lived to the hype. I messed with kernels more than I should have and easily corrupted the install and ruined the backups, but it was operator error lol.

Some web pages still suck to type on, but because there are too many gifs playing usually.

I like it. My only gripe is... Well, now that I'm running a fresh install with a good kernel, is that after messing with the flashlight, the SystemUI crashed. First time, too, lol.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

i don't have an issue with the flashlight though.

also for the gps thing do you mean device only mode? when you toggle it the pop up that comes up if you select disagree it defaults to device only mode.

i just noticed, there isn't any icon for gps anymore in the notification area at the top. i can't believe it's not there.

i use power toggles mainly and having a gps shortcut on power toggles brings you into the gps settings area directly so that is an option you can try.

previously on kikat i got around 24-35hr of usage per full charge typically with around 3~hr SOT. so far it seems to be the same on lollipop. it might be getting better after a few discharge cycles, but its hard to notice. nothing like the 30% improvement which is supposed to happen.

How long do you leave it on? If mine's on for longer than 30 seconds it doesn't work until a reboot is done.

I mean the WiFi/Battery saving mode. From the toggle I used to be able to hit once, and half the icon would light up, indicating that it wasn't using GPS. Tap it again, and it would use the GPS to find the location (High Accuracy mode). Now, it just goes straight to High Accuracy mode.

I think it depends on the usage and what apps you're using. Ah well, my next phone will have a much better battery.
