How do I test if random IP addresses are stealing my bandwith?

PlayDis

Router : Netgear WNDR4300

Firmware : v1.0.1.60

Although no noticeable disruption has occurred on my network, I have notice some random IP addresses sharing the same MAC address as recognised devices connected to my router.

e.g.

somehow they all seem to have the same mac as my iphone :o

another example below PC

btw using wireless

any ideas on how I can perhaps see what they are doing or how they even connected in the first place?

should i be concerned?

thanks!

Change the wireless passphrase, reconnect your devices and observe!

You should be able to ban certain mac addresses as well. Or filter. Whatever. I have a linksys something or other nothing overly fancy, and it does it (although there are no external antennas so it might be magic) - and banning mac addresses is easier (for me anyways) than allowing them.

Before I started banning them, everytime someone would stop by and wants to connect to my wifi I look at them and just go UGHHHHHHHHH.... I have to login in the basement (I have it to only be administered from a hardwired connection), get your mac address, go down there, type a gazillion things, save it, reboot it, walk allllll the way up stairs - both directions in the freezing cold without mittens... etc, etc.... Now I just login every few weeks (more like months) or when I fell its unbearably slow - and if there are some devices connected I don't recognize the mac address to - copy, paste, done.

I always guarantee that no more than 50% of what I say is useful.

Hello,

I agree, create a mac filter. It's basically something were even if someone has your wirless IP, you still need to allow them acess ( Usually through your ISP settings )

Thanks,

Harry

It seems impossible until it's done.

Are you sure that these are not IP addresses that your iphone has had in the past?

What are the MAC addresses? I hope you know that <unknown> is not a MAC, rather the device is not supplying a hostname/no hostname is known for it...

If they had the same MAC, they would be getting served the same IP, and your router would be shitting itself...

Just be observant about things on your network and check often, change your passwords every few months (handy for keeping the random visitors off anyway), filter and ban mac addresses etc. Basically do a bit of admin.
