Make sure the resolution is equal or more to your monitor's and get a picture with the correct aspect ratio.

Just head over to the My Current Background thread or the Background Gallery, not too hard to do. ;)

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

I always use 4k or higher resolution images for my backgrounds. It really help with clarity.

I think it might be the fact that you're using a 4k/2160p monitor with upscaled images, but I'm not sure.

Edit: As in the background sources you're using upscale lower res images to 4k. It's not actually your fault or doing.

Convert them to PNG.

The damage has already been done if they're not in png format already. Jpeg degrades color quality so it makes virtually no difference turning a jpg into a png. Plus that has nothing to do with resolution, nice though that you know that png is a superior quality format for images. +1 and -1 at the same time. Yer sitting on a flat 0.

-edit-

O.P. I just make my own backgrounds for my desktops so i can control the specific res and sharpness of it. As well as a bit of customization doesn't hurt either :P

Scale it down to your native monitor resolution and sharpen it.

Better take a picture which size is equal to your monitor resolution.

  • 3 months later...

Sorry to dig a dead thread but I thought I would quickly add this so that anyone wondering the same thing would know how to fix the problem.

Apparently, this is a result of windows compressing the image down into worse quality to save memory for quicker startup etc. This page --> (Windows compressing your HQ backgrounds) shows an example and explains it well, as well as giving some solutions to help fix the problem.

Once again, apologies for the necro.
