Simple question (I hope)

So I planned on having my 7950 act as my main GPU, doing all the work (gaming and stuff like that) while my 480 sits there and folds. I want to have it where my 480 will fold on something like low or medium (not full tilt) while I game or dink around on the internet. Is this possible, or will I have to use the screensaver?

Another thing, it would be nice to have my CPU and 7950 fold full tilt when I have it on full (again, not using the screensaver).

It should be possible. The drivers are not mutually exclusive as far as I know so you can just install them both at the same time and have the 480 folding while the 7950 functions as your gaming GPU.

Don't think the screensaver is needed

it should work, only way to find out is to try.

but it won't work exactly like you want it to.

Most likely the best option to manually pause

and unpause the cpu/gpu slot when needed,

and always have the 480 running.

Unless you come up with something weird

and install third party software or something else,

the 480 will be running full throttle as far as i know.

it's all or nothing.

You "might" be able to find a flag or something

that will enable the 480 to run regardless of the

medium/high status. But i'm not sure, i can't find any.

maybe whaler has something to add, he usually does :P.

@tobben me? :)

Unfortunately GPU's only fold at full. It's all or nothing. So, use the advanced view and then you can fold set the system to Full, that way both GPU's run. BTW with the newest client I think you can get GPU's folding on "medium" but that only effects if you also doing CPU. If you don't have a CPU slot, just slid it to Full.

Then manually pause the AMD card when you want to run a game. Depending on your system, when playing some games, you might have to also pause the 480. But, you should be able to have the 480 going while the 7950 isn't and browsing, watching movies, etc... But ya, you will need to manually pause and un-pause the slots.

The screensaver is needed if you have the system set to "idle" or "low". Then some sort of enabled screensaver is needed to kick the GPU's into folding and the CPU as well. This is the automated method... You will need to use the manual control method.

So... With luck setting it at full the 480 will hammer away without any fiddling?

indeed, with slight emphasis on "with luck"

Guess I'll have to play with it on Monday or Sunday when I get everything going.

Also, slightly off topic, but still somewhat on topic, but not really: Which port on the 480 is for a VGA adapter? Also, can I switch between the two cards by changing where monitors are connected?

You can put a DVI-* to VGA adapter in any of them; just make sure you're not trying to put an adapter with pins where there aren't pins. In theory, you can, but that'd cause wear and tear on the connectors, so I'd be careful if I were you.

I think that only one of them can be used with the adapter (that's the case with my 7950 at least).

i had a 290, 660 and 7750 all folding for a while in the same rig. no special adapters, and two monitors both plugged into the 290. I could game on the 290 while the other two folded, but I recall there being AMD driver issues so I didn't. I even used the 660 for hybrid physx for batman, and folded with the same hacked driver. never used the screen saver so i'm sure its not necessary.

as always, ymmv.

As far as I know, the only one you could use for graphics output is the one in the primary slot. Even when setup two cards for XFire or SLI, you still only use the outputs of one card. Not sure what you would get if you hook a monitor up to the 480...
