iMac 5k Retina Display

YES NO EMBARGO! AND LINUS GOT A HAIRCUT.

Max res is 360p?

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Why didn't apple send you guys a sample? Did they fear you were going to rip into and not change the minds of the majority of people already watching this channel? Did they want the money? It's one review unit Apple...if anything it's probably bringing good publicity for mac...

Wrong crowd and theres no need; Apple markets there products very well already. And I can assure you, if Apple's marketing department thought it to be profitable they would be doing it.

They still make huge bezels, a shiny front bottom part, and only have glass panel options that are impossible tho use in an office environment for editing. Ugh

Oh and they are "stunningly quiet" because they are stunningly hot. The thicker ones that got replaced recently with the really thin ones used to get hot enough at the top to cause burns. I used to set my cold coffee there to warm it up.  A lot of iMacs are known for dead GPUs if you render a lot with them because of the heat issue.

If you manually adjust the fans they can get really loud, and can cool pretty while being barely audible, but apple made it so they wont be audible. Ever. Even if you are hitting dangerous temperatures. Quiet is one thing but that is irresponsible.

The ports in the back aren't a design compromise. They have always been like that, even on the previous thicker iMacs. It's asinine. Still pisses me off to this day as I still use the 27" thicker ones from a couple of years ago. Plenty of space on the side for at least a couple of usb ports but I have to pick up/rotate the whole damn thing just to plug a usb in. Wtf apple. That siad suprisingly they don't scratch easily. I noticed that they stayed clean, even with the macs at the university I used to work for the IT department at. Those are very high traffic. The lack of mic jack pisses me off to, I'm pretty certain the old ones had a jack.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Pretty sure, that the iMac supports headsets with 4pin connectors.

Also it is pretty clear, why they went with 5K. It is 2x the resolution (or 4x pixels) than the non-Retina iMac.

Apps that I would recommend on OS X are

Smoothmouse - This app gives you the option of changing mouse acceleration to that of Windows, retain Mac settings, or completely off(no acceleration)

Cinch- Windows Aero Snap; Snap top=full screen, snap left= half screen on left side, same for right.

Those are the only 2 that I recall using on my Hackintosh.

Share your thoughts on continuity/handoff with your iPhone 6.
Pixelmator is an amazing photo editing app for both Mac and iOS and it also utilizes Apple's latest features.
And this machine is comparitvely cheap when compared to dell 5K monitor which costs the same especially given that you're a getting a whole PC rather than a monitor
Also the trackpad is soo much better than their mouse

You guys should make a video comparing this with other all-in-ones.

I don't like the thick bezels to its display. So for me, its not that pretty.

lol i saw the video and started to play it.  a couple secs in a wanted to see whats going on in the forums first.

So I predict , great screen  (no idea if it has a gpu or intel graphics), build quality is great, cant upgrade, overpriced

What I'm curious about

Assuming ram is soldered on but what did they do for a hard drive ssd, soldered like the macbook, is that upgradable (and can you replace the os. I remember reading intel looking into locking down there chips to disable multiple OSes although I'm sure we would see a video about that before an iMac video

Since OSX is an in house OS how does it deal with the 5k, ie small text in random places.

Specs i5 or i7, gpu or no gpu. ram ect ect

omg if price wasnt an issue and its an overpriced all in one, htpc like pos, I would love to see a combo video of snl I threw it on the ground and office space baseball bat destruction with slick linus the entire team.  but alas i did see him say he bought it himself and it would be a waste but I'm sure it would get a load of views!!!

Off to go watch the video and than ill be back

+1 for Cinch, that was the biggest feature I missed after switching my work to a mac.

Am I allowed to say that I don't think the iMac looks good. Because I don't.

I also don't like the concept for "retina" displays. I don't see jaggies on a typical 27" 1440P display in normal non-gaming use, and I don't see how having a preview that's the same size, but higher res will help with editing, it's still a relatively tiny preview.

But that's my thoughts, and you don't have to agree with them.

Normandy - Intel Core i5 3470, 8 GB Corsair Vengenace LP, EVGA GTX 960 SSC, Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP, WD Blue 1 TB, Seagate 320 GB (steam), Seagate 320 GB (experimental, second OS, etc), Windows 8.1 + Ubuntu 14.10

Garrus - HP Stream 11

I use NTFS driver for Mac (NTFS Write Support), CleanMyMac2, Folx3, Cinch, MPlayerX (Works like VLC).

Inbuilt Facebook and Twitter integration is very good. I use it very often. Use Spotlight (Alt + Space) anywhere for quick searches. Gives good results.

Have a fun with confusing on Command, Option key! lolz!! :P

I don't think that you'll love iMac. I can tell you that!

Have fun @Linus:)  :)  :)

@LinusTech

Linus, I want to tell you that if you take a look at Mac OS X, please take into consideration who it is aimed at. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I think it is close to that. Even though it's not a gaming OS (yet. It might never be, but there's a chance xD), it does a great job in all the other applications, while being based on UNIX. Also, if you need some neat apps/extensions I can recommend a few:

Spectacle - Gives you greater control over window managment resorting to key shortcuts.

AppTrap - When you delete/unnistall an up, it warns you of any files related to that app that might still be in the HDD.

gfxcardstatus - Not so useful perhaps on the iMac, but it could still be fun to use. It tells you what GPU you're using atm (integrated or dedicated) and allows to force one or the other. Though I think it won't work on the iMac because of the screen res.

ShareMouse/Synergy - Try it out. A cool app to control 2 computers with 1 pair of keyboard/mouse. It works on a PC and Mac at the same time. Try it with the iMac and a laptop, or iMac and another desktop PC. You can share links and files between computers as well.

CloudApp - Share links, gifs, prints and other files with others. It is really simple to use and goes really well with the Mac OS X GUI.

Bartender - It gives you greater control over the App Icon menu on the top right.

MplayerX - IMO, best video player.

The Apple Mail client I think it's pretty good as well, but that is more of a opinion. I've heard it lacks some features, though all of the ones I usually use in a mail client, that app has it.

I would like to point out that I'm an avid PC gamer, and I do own a desktop PC where I game a lot. That said, I also like my MBP a lot, mainly due to Mac OS X. It is a great OS for productivity, and for those who are familiar with it (like I am) it can be better than Windows.

BTW nice video Linus, can't wait for the following ones you promised! xD
