You know you're a techie when. . .

When your desk is full of useful cables.

When your friends don't understand you and require you to speak in simple terms, which you're doing already.

When you have multiple old cellphones that no longer work lying around.

When you have all the ethernet ports on your switch occupied.

When you have an external battery on you most of the time.

When your backpack is extremely heavy thanks to the technology it's full of.

1. Yep, only things I need

2. I don't have friends :D

3. No, I don't have that

4. I only use 1 ethernet port...

5. Nope

6. An iPad, food and books...

I'm not a techie?

Nah. You know you're a techie when you meet at least some of the criteria on here this thread,

I guess.

When you cant help but buy more mechanical keyboards just because you love them.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

When you use an original Model M (like me!)

When your friends complain about your usage of mechanical keyboards due to them being far too loud for them even with noise cancellation on your microphone.

When you have your personal server in rack mounted in a colo with 100m/b up and down connection

When you have that server running esxi and 5 os's on it.

When you have a spare gaming pc in parts in your closet because you no longer need the parts.

When consumer grade home networking equipment isnt good enough for you and you have to get cisco routers and switches.

Oh and when you cant find a computer desk to suit you so you build your own.

When you have unlimited data on your 3/4G enabled device because you believe it's the best value.

When you have a third-party charge-them-all charger with different amperage ports.

When you carry a USB flash drive around your neck with a bunch of portable tools on, antivirus, browser, utility installers etc.

You have a bag with a laptop (In my case a Chromebook as I use it for college, battery life is great for the price) as you refuse to use the College "Slim PCs" (takes more than 5 minutes to load a complex webpage, even with business grade internet) as well as:

  • a portable battery bank
  • two micro USB extending cables
  • one more micro USB cable
  • a micro USB to 30 pin Apple adapter
  • a mini USB B cable
  • an Apple lightning cable
  • a cat 5e cable, just in case I need to tap into the college network (they only use the proxy on the wireless network for some reason, the college PCs have it applied to them too but not additional devices, weird.
  • A kit full of screw drivers, tweezers, spudgers, cleaning cloth
  • anti-ESD band,
  • pliers, solder and wire snips.
  • IDE & SATA to USB adapter
  • a SATA cable
  • Spare mouse

All that with a binder full of my actual college stuff.

(HND Electronics Student here)

Oh, story from today actually.

I had to get my college card reprinted as some details that needed to be changed finally did.

They were using a small Windows netbook with a mouse, DSLR, card scanner, card printer, a light and a flash drive off a USB hub plugged into one of the ports on the netbook. They couldn't get anything to work so I suggested they look into getting a powered USB hub.

They asked if I'm part of the college IT team...
