SLR video camera VS HD camera..

itsparks

I'm getting into the market to buy a camera. I have been going back and forth speanding TONS of time on youtube and forums reading about the two cameras i have in mind.  I want to take lots of video of a few types of things. First family stuff, then my R/C Turbine jets & R/C helis. ( fast moving stuff )

I'm looking to spend 1500$, will be using Final Cut Pro X on my macbook 15" laptop.

Two cameras im looking at are Nikon D7100 OR the Canon XA10. I have never used a decent hd camera and looking for pro's vs cons.

Right now I do own a Nikon D80 with 2 lenses.

Will the Nikon D7100 be good for HD video ? Will I always have to use a tri-pod ?

Only thing I can say for sure is dont go with Nikon for video, sure it gets the job done but it ain't anything fancy, just what I've heard from users.

I'm sure a go pro does a better job then the d7100 and it cost less.

As for Canon, all I know is "they are better than nikon with video"

But I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will help you further. (and maybe correct me)

if you want pure pixels(4k) go with a Panasonic GH4.

if you want the quality but less pixels go with canon.

but don't go with nikon for filming, they don't have such a good name for that.

a tripod is only needed for good solid recording with heavy gear, a monopod is a cheaper and more mobile solution to it, if you move around when recording and you got a monopod mounted it acts as a gyro, giving a better balance and smoother image in the end.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

if you're looking into video, go for a canon as they're known for doing videos, while nikon are more into pictures.

the panasonic suggested above is also a good decision :)

Don't think ill be grabbing a SLR camera to do Video. Most likely will buy the Canon XA 20 or XA10. I will be taking video of R/C Heli's and 350khph Jets.

I think that's the right choice since you don't need a small dof.

The AX20 is a solid camera for video. I wouldn't get the D7100 now because at low light the Nikon's aren't that clean (coming from a Nikon owner), there is a little bit more noise. I would go for the XA20. Its a very good camera.
