Thermal throttling

xnoobftw

Would i experience thermal throttling if i were to add a 2nd r9 290x under the GPU? (IF.. im not actually planning to do it) But there is probably just enough space for like a MSI one....

I dont think so, but depends on the airflow u have in ur case and the actual temps on the first gpu...

rig: i7 4770k @4.1Ghz (delidded), Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600Mhz, ROG Maximus VI Hero, Noctua NH-D14, EVGA GTX980SC, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB, Corsair SF600, self-built wooden Case, CoolerMaster QuickFire TK, Logitech G502, Blue Yeti, BenQ GW2760HS

around 44-50 degrees celcius idle and around 65-70 degrees celcius underload

EDIT: I have the stock fan that comes with the case in the front and a sp 120 under it for intake (right side of case) and 2 exhaust sp120 on top with 1 stock fan exhausting air for the back

U shouldn't have thermal throttling, and I'd recommend to have more intake fans than exhaust ones, so u can filter the dust from them...

my exhaust fans doesnt spin up until im under load and they spin at most 50%... (so i guess i have positive pressure? xD

As someone who recently replaced their 290x in a case with excellent airflow I can tell you that yes, you will get throttled if you add another card. 290xs run SUPER hot and unless you have a blower cooler, add all that heat to the inside of your case. 290x is by no means a bad card, it's great! But it runs hot as hell and 2 of them in the same case will throttle, how much depends on your airflow.

I CALL BS.

OP if you have decent (that is, any) airflow, you will be fine. the worst that can happen is you choke the top card. but then just add a fan somewhere in the case, pushing air into the top card

I didn't say he'd see massive throttling, just some and the amount is dependant on the airflow. They do run hot, I still have on in a box in my closet.

Also, remember in crossfire, if one throttles, they both do.

The positive pressure is the important thing, not for temps directly, but for dust entering from uncovered spots... (then it goes where it shouldnt and temps raise... ^^)

well if it helps my ambient temperature here (in singapore) is like 30 degrees all year round.... WOULD I SURVIVE THE HEAT? :o

youll be fine. as i said, the key is to take the out of the case ASAP. that may mean you need another fan blowing air at the gpus

Ah thank you! :D Also would you crossfire with my motherboard? (like would there be bottlenecks in terms of pci-e lanes?) Im not too sure about this....

yes. even my Gigabyte R9 290 OC CF with one PCIe slot in between. The one on the top still can throttle when it try to push my 7680X1440. I even tried to leave the case open with a 300mm fan push air in.

I guess only water cooling can solve the problem, which I'm doing right now.

Depend on the load and room temperature.

When you run your game MAX out everything and still cant get up to 60FPS, Yes, the first card will throttle.
