LG Display is getting rid of bezels for good with Neo Edge tech

bezel-thin-640x319.jpg

LG has always been known to have one of the best screen to phone ratio sizes on their smartphones, but they are taking it another step further.

LG Display will be using the new Neo Edge technology where they will put together the circuit board, touch panel, and backlighting into one single unit.

The display they showed off has a bezel as thin as a credit card edge. 0.7mm

Benefits of Neo Edge

- Block light leakage

- Displays are now water proof and dust proof

- Getting rid of bezels

These new screens will go into mass production next month and will be sold first to China (not sure which Chinese companies are getting these new displays first, probably Oppo and Huawei).

I am personally more interested in this Neo Edge technology to be implemented on LG monitor/tv panels too. I would love a "bezel-less" monitor.

Make it happen LG.

I wonder what happens to the screen when you drop the phone on its side with that thin bezel...

I imagine Oppo will be the first to get them. Their Find series phones always seem to have the latest tech in them ahead of everyone else.

Cool, I would love to see this ,But it comes with a huge maintenance risk i believe , since there's gonna be nothing to shield if something were to bump into it with quite a good amount of force , especially when shipping overseas..

Details separate people.

I wonder what happens to the screen when you drop the phone on its side with that thin bezel...

One of the reasons it's thinner is that they're moving from using double sided tape to an adhesive to hold down the display. Which is also why it's now water and dust proof.

I imagine it'll be about the same as when you drop it on a slightly thicker phone.

Bezels are not the same as the amount of body between your hand and the screen.

Yeah but with the larger bezels there is more material (glass) to absorb the shock from damaging the liquid crystals...

Agreed. I also don't care for bezel less smartphone displays since I would probably accidently touch the sides with my fingers.

Monitors on the other hand. No bezel/no light leakage = yummy.

What display tech does it work with or is it its own?

It's not it's own. It will work with any display tech (tn, ips, oled, etc).

This is very interesting, not just for single panels, but for the possible future of amalgamating multiple panels into outsized or custom use executions. TV Walls, signage, immersive multimonitor setups, etc. Almost bezel-less from the factory units... mmmmm.

Maybe this makes me old but I already don't know how to hold my m8 without constantly clicking on something on my display.

And there's this other phone thing with a display on the back side too.

What's happening??

Please put this in monitors, I'd love to have triple display with no bezel getting in the way.

For people that want this in monitors it's already almost here. My LG 27EA63 has super thin top, left, and right bezels. The only large bezel is the bottom, which I'd assume is where they stuffed the PCB that controls everything.
