Plasma Televisions are going Extinct

Move over grandpa , it's 4K Era..

TC-P60ZT60-700_v2.jpg

Yup! according to CNN , The last company to make plasma TV screens for U.S. consumers said this week that it would stop production of plasma sets in November. The widely expected announcement by LG has put the final nail in plasma TV's coffin.

it is expected that after this years Christmas sales, companies won't look back at plasma technology for the intend of making a Television screen..

LGOLEDTVPress.jpg?itok=NXT0gBwn

Plasma TV Screens generally start from 720P & max out at 1080p , Screen size ranged from 30''  upto 152" & cost upto 4000$ on consumer grade & came with the Very First High definition 3D experience into Living rooms.

Samsung said earlier this year that it too would stop making plasma screens by November. Panasonic, the only other manufacturer of plasma TVs for U.S. consumers, shut down its plasma screen production in 2013.

Panasonic earlier this year stopped making plasmas

As the TV makers sell off their existing plasma TV inventory, tech consultancy IHS expects that plasma TVs will no longer be available in U.S. stores after the 2014 holiday shopping season.

TV buyers have opted for the less expensive, higher-resolution and lower-energy LCD TV technology over plasma TVs. Once a popular high-end option for HDTV sets, plasma technology has been outpaced by LCD, which includes the super-thin LED TVs.

This came as shocking to some but TV buyers have opted for the less expensive, higher-resolution and lower-energy LCD TV technology over plasma TVs. Once a popular high-end option for HDTV sets, plasma technology has been outpaced by LCD, which includes the super-thin LED TVs.

Plasma TVs offered what many considered to be the best picture quality on the market in the past few years  at higher prices than LCDs. They gained favor thanks to their brighter images, warmer tones and wider viewing angles, But Now the tables have turned..

sony-dsc-29-625x1000.jpg

In 2010, the shipments of plasma TVs reached 18.2 million units globally & Panasonic shipped 19.1 million plasma TV panels in total ,Since that time, shipments of plasma TVs have declined substantially. This decline has been attributed to the competition from liquid crystal (LCD) televisions

So how do they work?

The technology behind plasma TVs consists of hundreds of thousands of tiny pixel cells containing gases which are held between two sheets of glass. When the gases in these cells are excited by electricity, the gas is turned into plasma and light is emitted, which in turn is translated into color and images

maxresdefault.jpg

Benefits of the plasma screens are that they are capable of producing deeper blacks allowing for superior contrast ratios faster response time, greater color spectrum, and wider viewing angle than LED panel, But Plasma screens have been lagging behind CRT and LCD screens in terms of energy consumption efficiency

Plasma televisions resolution however was locked at 1080p something which was higher (actually very high) at the time , But this foreshadows that 4k resolution is taking over the trends & the end of 720p/i in general (720p is the 360p of 2014)

There are still a few Chinese companies producing plasma TVs, but they don't sell their televisions in the United States. They too will likely stop plasma production by 2016, IHS forecasts.

New technologies like OLED is taking over Plasma with way more benefits , So Rest in Peace good Ol Plasma..

Well, that might just be good.

Plasma is not very power efficient, so it's about time for it to move over and make some room for OLED/LED.

The had good black levels and colours but they had so many downfalls, such as burn-in and high power consumption. It's about time they died off.

But so pretty.

I'd always love it when someone would actually buy one from me. Pioneer Reps loved me, cause I actually moved their 5-10k TVs aha. 2 a month was my average. It was insane.

Buying one was akin to those who bought HDTVs right when they came out. Paying so much for what, was what people wondered.

Right up until they watched content on them, or even gamed on them.

They were just, and still are, that good. I've been trying to source a decent condition Signature panel for a while now, cause those are just another level of over engineering awesomeness.

They are still heavily used in Video Production, So I'd guess that there is going to be one manufacturer who is still going to be making CRTs however it maybe in small batches and only sold within professional channels.

RIP VT60 & ZT60 :-( It's a sad day. When we sold our last VT60 I had to stop and take a moment. I don't know if I will ever see another with a picture that nice.
Until OLED becomes much cheaper any way. LG's OLED are wicked over saturated and there is nothing you can do about it. I've not seen any other OLED's.

It's kinda sad to see such great display technology go, but I can understand why. With OLED TVs starting to become available it was kind of expected that such a thing would happen. Heck, it would've been good if we could've had plasma computer displays that were power efficient. Imagine those deep, deep blacks and that contrast and no backlight bleeding. But I guess we'll hopefully see OLED computer monitors in the future. It would surely put an end to the backlight bleed issues found on most IPS, PLS and AHVA monitors.

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.
