FBI Holds Secret Meeting To Scare Congress Into Backdooring Phone Encryption

Victorious Secret

ckz8gjevvgj20vmdsm1g.jpg

Well, well, well.

To be honest this isn't surprising to me, the FBI is running scared because companies like Google and Apple are actively giving them the "fuck off" to snooping on customer data, and they are pulling all the excuses the book has to try and strong-arm them otherwise.

I find it ironic. The very companies that have so much sway over the US government and actually abuse it might actually use said power to do something exceedingly positive for consumers. If they hold their ground and tell both the US Gov and FBI to pound sand, it'll be a strong and enduring win for consumer privacy rights.

Unless you believe that whole "think of the children" bullshit the FBI and co are trying to sell. In which case I also have a few bridges for you.

In September, both Apple and Google announced plans to encrypt information on iOS and Android devices by default. Almost immediately, there was a collective freakout by law enforcement types. But, try as they might, these law enforcement folks couldn't paint any realistic scenario of where this would be a serious problem. Sure, they conjured up scenarios, but upon inspectionthey pretty much all fell apart. Instead, what was clear was that encryption could protect users from people copying information off of phones without permission, and, in fact, the FBI itself recommends you encrypt the data on your phone.

But it didn't stop FBI director James Comey from ignoring the advice of his own agency and pushing for a new law that would create back doors (he called them front doors, but when asked to explain the difference, he admitted that he wasn't "smart enough" to understand the distinction) in such encryption.

So, now, of course, the FBI/DOJ gets to go up to Congress and tell them scary stories about just how necessary breaking encryption would be. And it's being done in total secrecy, because if it was done in public, experts might debunk the claims, like they've done with basically all of the scenarios provided in public to date.

FBI and Justice Department officials met with House staffers this week for a classified briefing on how encryption is hurting police investigations, according to staffers familiar with the meeting. The briefing included Democratic and Republican aides for the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees, the staffers said. The meeting was held in a classified room, and aides are forbidden from revealing what was discussed.

What dichotomy the capitalist dictatorship of America is.   I really don't know where to start with this.

I guess the clarifying things to remember are that the companies who strong arm the government for more control tend to be ISP's, the movie and music industry and general content delivery providers. While those who want better security and an open internet with more freedom are the companies that make money off of data and hardware like Google, yahoo, MS, apple etc.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

But think of the children! If we don't have a "secret" way into every single thing in the world how do we know there aren't children in there? I mean, sure it's a phone, but there could be children inside! You'll never know if we don't force them to leave a major security flaw in it!

No, you misunderstand. They want you to encrypt your phone; they just want to be sure that they aren't have a set of keys.
