Windows 7 vs Windows 8.1

Alir

Never thought I'd ask this.

My old crap desktop runs windows 7. Love it, or used to love it. It's old and very slow so it's difficult for me to accurately assess its performance.

I bought a laptop last year that ran windows 8 - didn't upgrade to 8.1 because of software bugs with Dolby audio drivers. My laptop broke, got a refund and now I'm back to the dying W7 PC. Liked W8 a lot more though that's probably because I had an SSD in my ultraboko and now I'm back to a 5400 RPM HDD.

I actually got used to the W8 and sort of liked it. The only real problem I found with it was with LOTR BFME 1 and 2 - the game kept crashing. I don't know why and so am not sure if it was an OS problem.

1) So there's the first question: Does Windows 8.1 have the same compatibility with games and software as windows 7? Or does Windows 8.1 have software problems?

Is it worth me going to Windows 8.1, considering I'm already used to windows 8? I do like the extra apps and games - well the only game I like from windows 8 is Halo spartan assault.

2) Or should I go for windows 7? --Which OS is better for games, multitasking, working, etc.?

I will likely go for W10 when it's out.

Do people think Windows 8.1 has matured enough yet to be a good OS? I honestly found it to be a good OS - though I used classic shell not the stupid metro start crap they had going on.

Compatability will be fine. If a game says it runs on Windows, it'll work on either.

I think 8.1 has some huge imporvements, like booting to the desktop. That and start8 make a good combo if you don't like the metro crap.

I could be very wrong

Windows 8.1 update fixed alot of the issues. You could always try running your games in compatibility mode?

If you have a touch screen Win 8.1, if you don't then Win 7 is fine.

I actually disagree with that.

Windows 8 was easier to use with my mouse, than with touch.

All the touch features like swiping from the left or the right of the screen are more easily do-able with the mouse.

Well, you don't swipe but just drag the curser to the top left or top right of the screen if you get what I mean.

I'm not 'upgrading' though. I'm building a pc and installing a fresh OS.

I have the option between W7 HP and W8.1P
