Advice on Applying for Internship?

RelentlessAF

Hey guys, so through my school I get notified of IT related work that the gets offered/ partnered with. Earlier I received and e-mail about an internship linked here: http://trefoilgroup.com/careers/production-artist-intern.html

I have a lot of the skills they are asking for, for the most part. However I'd like advice on how I should base my resume (all my past work experience has been re-tail or warehouses).

I also have a few example projects for what I can program (software monitor, web browser, first-person-shooter, multi-threaded applications, haven't done a website yet.) I was wondering if you had ideas on other samples I should create as well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

exaggerate your skills within reason,

example if you know a little html or other coding, you can always say things like i have experience with html

I would definitely recommend getting one it gives you that added level of experience to put on your resume when you try and get a job after graduation. It can help you stand out from the others, and some internships even turn into jobs.

I did and internship the first 2 years of high school that turned into a job for the other 2. It's definitely helped me getting jobs down the road just because I have more experience than most people my age plus a college degree lol

DO not exaggerate your skills at any point!!

That could turn into one of the worst mistakes possible when applying for a position. The first time they ask you do do something you apparently said you could do and now are failing to do so will make you look like a complete liar so how do you expect them to believe anything else you said.

Definitely focus on your strengths though, Are you going for a CS or CST degree?

CS specifically, I mainly want to get into video game programming but am open to software design should that be the case.

thats why i said within reason, eg you have excellent team working and communication skills, instead of good team working and communication skills

Always e-mail companies with your resume, don't just walk in and confront them.

Yeah it states that in the description.

@GingerbreadPK

Okay what are you actually asking here? Is it how to write a CV?

Have you got a CV written already? Where are you in your education at the moment (school/university etc.)?  Have you got any formal education in this area? How did you learn the skills you have (i.e. formal education/self taught)? We need more information.

You seem to be worried that your experience is not directly related to the internship. Don't be so worried about that. What you will use your work experience for is to show that you are a good worker (i.e. somebody who enjoys working). Having gaps in your CV (you're not in school or work for some period in time) looks bad. It is good if you have very few gaps and you worked immediately after finishing school for the summer.

With regard to why you suit the internship, your personal interest in the subject and the skills you already have are your selling points (education if you have any also). If you have learnt all these computer skills purely because you are interested in them and you have no formal education; then this can go well for you but it really depends on how competent you are with these skills. Basically you will need to know your stuff to be in with a chance.

Rig: i7 2600K @ 4.2GHz, Larkooler Watercooling System, MSI Z68a-gd80-G3, 8GB G.Skill Sniper 1600MHz CL9, Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce 3x 2GB OC, Samsung 840 250GB, 1TB WD Caviar Blue, Auzentech X-FI Forte 7.1, XFX PRO650W, Silverstone RV02 Monitors: Asus PB278Q, LG W2243S-PF (Gaming / overclocked to 74Hz) Peripherals: Logitech G9x Laser, QPad MK-50, AudioTechnica ATH AD700

Companies want to see what you've done, not what you could do. Experience proven is always better than skills.
