Thoughts on a Macbook Pro?

Toasted Waffles

I'm thinking of getting a Macbook Pro for college next year. However I've never used a mac for more than 20 minutes - compared to PC

The Reasons I'm thinking -

  • Nice battery life
  • Beautiful screen
  • Decent hardware
  • Can Dual Boot into Windows
  • Nice features built-in (assist with my time, ect.)
  • Design is unmatched in the industry (all metal, so pretty :D)

I have one and I do like it. It does everything I need it to do in my Engineering classes (runs all the programs) when I boot it into windows. Its just really expensive (Mac duh). I bought mine as a refurbished model so I found it at a reasonable price. It a pretty good machine but now there are a lot of other laptops that are just as good. (Dell XPS 15 is an example)

I use my 2012 15" non retina macbook pro for work. I mainly do paperwork with huge spreadsheets open. I have it hooked up to a 24" Apple Cinema Display and it is by far the best laptop I've used. I have a Sony Vaio that I use to use and in the same timeframe it is extremely sluggish.

If you can splash the cash I'd say get one! They are great machines and they don't look aged. Without digging too deep into them you can't tell what age they are if they're looked after well. A buddy of mine has one of the first Unibody Macbooks and it looks identical to my 2012. They are great machines, I recommend them over a windows laptop any day.

And they hold their price well. So if you want to swap it out for a new one in two/three years you'll get a big chunk of cash for it for your new one.

OS X is a little cumbersome to get used to but once you've got used to it it's great. Yosemite runs amazing, great battery life even when I'm pushing it to it's limits.

The only gripe I have with it is the lack on a numpad, But seen as I do most of my work at my desk the Apple wired keyboard works great.

It's overpriced, but for work it should suffice.

I own a 2011 Macbook Pro and that is still working well (using it right now to type this :P). I dual boot windows on it because there are many applications i can't run on OS X.

It depends how you like OSX. Macbook is a great computer, fast and reliable but if you wanted to be using it to game then your options are very limited. If you are looking for a great computer that will last you a long time then the Macbook is the way to go. If you want  a computer that has Amazing hardware and good build quality then go with something around the same price with Windows. I personally just go the ASUS N550JK-DB74T which has superior hardware but only a 4:30 hour battery life on power saver. So it really comes down to what you are looking for.

If you want one, buy one. Who mods laptops anyway? If you don't go crazy on the options and just get a basic one, the price is fair.

OSX is one of the easiest OS in the world to learn, it's basically idiot-proof. In terms of technology it hasn't changed much from what Lion had to offer, but it's still very good.

You can run Windows on them, but I wouldn't recommend it. Their drivers aren't that great and while their GPU switching tech is similar to Optimus, last time I checked it's not the same thing and as a result it doesn't work on Windows. That may have changed for the Haswell based ones though.

EDIT: apparently most of them just run Intel Iris so it's no longer a problem. Not great for gaming tough.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

My idea is that since it can dual boot into windows, I can use Steam in home streaming to play games on it.

The laptop is fairly priced for what you get inside, and remember some of the money goes into the frame.

I happen to think apple laptops are reasonably priced. They're very high quality machines and use top notch parts. That being said I don't like OS X very much, well, more that Windows, but less than GNU/Linux ;) They make great linux boxes

I have a 2014 15" MBP

I also own the 2013 MBP but it's the stock version 2.0 ghz i7 256 ssd 8 gb intel graphics but still runs like a boss. IMO Macbook's are the best laptops for college students, it just comes down to how much are you willing to spend.

I know you can run Windows with Bootcamp. My sister does it. I'm just saying not all of the laptop's features work as well in Windows as they do in OSX.

you can get something much better for cheaper. but that isn't the point. it is a beautiful laptop with what i believe to be the most advanced os(other than app/game support which just flat out sucks) and hardware that, although on paper isn't that great, the osx optimization is great and it will feel snappy for a long time. if you will be using windows, maybe less so, but it will still be an excellent laptop.

If you look at the nvidia gpus they used to use, they were actually quite low end. their upgrade to intel hd graphics was literally an upgrade. the intel iris/iris pro graphics are a significant upgrade. they aren't actually bad. besides, if you want a gaming laptop, then buy a gaming laptop. that is not the target use of any mac really.
