30 FPS vs 60 FPS (no, it's not another one of those threads)

SGM

So YouTube is finally starting to roll out support for 48 and 60 FPS playback (albeit only on Chrome) and I've watched a few comparison videos.

Firstly, there is definitely an improvement, especially in fast-paced scenes, but is it just me or does it seem almost surreal watching it so smooth? Like, it looks great and it flows like butter but there's something in my head telling me this isn't right. This feeling is intensified even more when watching videos games at 60 FPS.

Am I just used to watching almost everything at 30 FPS so 60 just seems odd or is there something else to it?

The only time incorrectly is spelled incorrectly is when it is spelled incorrectly.

Well a couple of things. First, your whole life you've watched live action at 30 fps or under. Of course it's  a shock

Second, cameras have natural blur, and was essentially doing the work for your eyes. 60 fps allows your eyes to add blur depending on where you focus, but it takes a minute to get used to- it's still a low framerate. I noticed stuff seemed less surreal at 120hz personally.

I'm addicted myself

It's almost like I'm playing it

I'm still experiencing issues with 1080p 60fps though

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Surreal is a good word.

60 fps is at a point where the motion blur is slightly less obvious than 30 fps but not so much that it's not that much harder to discern from reality.

Sometimes I think some, including me, have problems naturally adding motion blur for a minute when switching to 60 fps. It's still not fast enough almost.

I can say I've never seen ANYTHING in 48 or 60 fps and wished it was 24 or 30

We need this for more movies. Now.

This site has side-by-side comparison videos. I imagine anything on YouTube will be similar.

http://30vs60.com/

After watching a video at 60 I do seem to 'adjust' to the difference and it's less noticeable (though not entirely gone). It's an odd sensation. I'd like to think that as 60 FPS video becomes more ubiquitous (whenever that will be) it'll be less of a 'shock' to my eyes and mind, haha.

Well yes and no.

While I did mention it's an improvement that's not the topic. The strange sensation upon watching a video at 60 FPS for the first time is.

I've always gamed 60 fps.

But I used to play bf3 on the ps3 a lot. It had input latency and was 30 fps with frequent dips...

Once I decided to buy it for PC I remember going "Holy hell it's so smooth"

I wasn't even thinking about 60 vs 30 or anything. Honestly had been playing 30 on the ps3 for so long I forgot about it. This was after playing other 60 fps games on PC. Just for that game it made me go 'wow" since before I had only played that game at 30.
