Monster Intel Extreme, RAID 5, 32GB, GTX 980 client build - advice needed

PS: This is a SERIOUS request, not some 14 year old wetdream. Please treat it as such.

Hey guys. So I have a client who is a heavy user like myself, and he'll be running the following:

Adobe CS (Photoshop, Illustrator)

40-50+ browser tabs

Minitab, PHP, MySQL

high end video games

Spreadsheets, Google Apps, and more

4 drive RAID 5 array

So essentially, my client wants a machine that will last a good 8 years, while giving him great performance.

He plans on running 3 monitors, and playing video games as well.

Here is the current list:

Total Cost: $3510 USD

Case - Corsair Obsidian 750D

$160 - http://bit.ly/1rEFyz9

Processor - Intel Core i7-5930K

$570 - http://amzn.to/1p8RvCG

Motherboard - ASUS X99-Deluxe

$405 - http://amzn.to/1tmrcsL

Memory - ADATA XPG Z1 32GB

$500 - http://bit.ly/1rEBcbb

Graphics Card - ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 980 4GB

$590 - http://bit.ly/1rEBqPB

Hard Drive - Western Digital Black 2TB (x4)

$540 - http://amzn.to/1uaK9AC

SSD - Samsung 850 PRO 512GB

$375 - http://amzn.to/1nUrkPl

Power Supply - Corsair HX1000i 1000W

$230 - http://amzn.to/1wLO2e8

CPU Cooler - NZXT Kraken X61

$140 - http://bit.ly/1rEGNOS

So obviously, because its a high end build, a lot can be adjusted. This is just a very prelimnary rough draft. I wanted to ask you guys if you wanted to give any insight or advice. Let me know what you guys think.

In the future please use PCpartpicker :)

I've heard that the corsair obisidan series cases have quite a bit of plastic.

Good choice on the GPU, IDK if he would be able to game on 3 monitors off that though. He could always add another down the line for SLI.

that's a 5930k not a 5960x.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I'll get a build list in asecond, but I wouldn't do a 5960x with a 980 IMO... probably a 5930k and two 980s would be nice, we'll see.

What's his exact budget?

i'd go for a seasonic PSU. (a lot of people complain about corsair PSU's) or if you have to go Corsair, the AX1500i

Other than that, looks good.

ALso in my opinion because the budget is so high i'd watercool (custom) and maybe RAID the SSD's for either redundancy or for speed.

Will he be SLI'ing the 980's in the future?

This build will be great with SLI

Also, i'd go for a 5930K just for practicality

The thread says 5960x but the link is to a 5930k.

Weird, I know. So I assume he means 5930k and just typed 5960x by accident.

Fixed the processor, sorry bout that.

What do you recommend instead of an Obsidian? Im aware of the cases, I just put down what he preferred look wise.

I meant to write 5930K. I was also thinking a 2nd GTX 980.

SeaSonic's are great as well. Any specific model?

I don't think custom cooling is really needed. This is not really a hobby build, more for functionality. We don't need a cool looking loop.

I think we'll add a 2nd GTX 980. I think the one SSD will suffice. The RAID array is more for storing files. Faster access to the files won't be necessary.

Well a caselabs case would look amazing, but like 250$ for the base model for mATX. I think the Corsair 780t looks nice, although he would seem to like a clean aesthetic, so I would recommend the Phanteks Enthoo Luxe.

the 5930K is a pointless CPU, unless the person really needs the PCI-e lanes.

Main: i7 2600 | ASUS P8Z68-V | 2x4GB Vengeance 1600 | GTX 580 | WD Blue 1TB | Antec TP-650C | NH U12S | W7 x64

Not too familiar with Seasonic PSU's sorry. I just know they're great!

I thought a cooling loop would be nice, especially with the 750D and that big window. (at least install some NZXT Hue's just because! :)   )

And finally, a second 980 is a great idea, and yeah the 2nd SSD would be just for bragging rights. Whoops forgot about the raid array! (do you need a networking card?)

He'll go pretty high, but I won't include the number because it's more about getting good performance while staying reasonable. We're okay with stretching the budget, but we don't need to get a toy. It's a workstation with gaming capabilities.

CaseLabs is pretty boring, but it's an option. The Phanteks Enthoo Luxe in my opinion is better as well.

The only thing I don't like about that case is the gimmicky I/O.

He means the 5820k, which is exactly the same as the 5930k except it has 12 less PCIe lanes.

Ram's cheap because it doesn't have a heat spreader, never heard of ram overheating, so I assume it would be fine, and it's $100 cheaper than the next kit. The X99A didn't have too many differences over the Deluxe which is over $100 more, so why not just try it? PSU? it's overkill too, but so was the other, both are great anyway. Uhhh, not sure what else you want me to say, just tell me if you have a question

I'd recommend AX series over HX series for the power supply, and you should be throwing a second graphics card in there if they can go for it.

I'd go for the NZXT H440 myself, plus that NZXT Kraken X61 goes with the case. But that's not just the reason. The H440 has much more metal than the 750D and is of higher quality in my opinion. And @Shd0w2, I'd swap those Seagate HDDs out for WD Black HDDs. Much more reliable IMHO. ;)

I agree.

For X99 you either pick the 5820K or the 5960X. simple.

CORSAIR RIPPER: AMD 3970X - 3080TI & 2080TI - 64GB Ram - 2.5TB NVME SSD's - 35" G-Sync 120hz 1440P
MFB (Mining/Folding/Boinc): AMD 1600 - 3080 & 1080Ti - 16GB Ram - 240GB SSD
Dell OPTIPLEX:  Intel i5 6500 - 8GB Ram - 256GB SSD

I would go with the M.2 PCI-E x4 Samsung ssd since you have the ability. The power supply is very likely significant overkill. Also for what is there I would say that the 750D is a bit big and definitely bigger than needed.

What do I need for RAID? Are RAID cards still required?

I don't see the need for a third GTX 980. The scaling, heat, and TDP are unnecessary fluff.

I chose blacks because they're much more reliable. The Barracuda isn't that good.

The 840 PRO is fine, but the 850 PRO has Samsung's new vertical NAND, much more preferred,

We're ok with spending more on RAM, we don't want some crappy green lookin PCBs,

The X99-A is a fine choice. The Deluxe was just as a placeholder.

I'm not a fan of EVGA's PSU's. Not a bad unit, but would rather have the HXi or a SeaSonic PSU.

I'd recommend AX series over HX series for the power supply, and you should be throwing a second graphics card in there if they can go for it.

AX is no longer needed. HXi has full modular design.

I have the H440 and I love it. I also prefer the H440 as well.

@Mycelus ,it should. A 5930k would be better if he wants to add a lot of expansion cards though.

I was going to recommend RAID 10 over RAID 5 for varying reasons, but since that's just for storage and not so much about performance, that seems fine.

Note that having onboard RAID 5 means it will use the CPU for doing parity calculations, so that should be considered when doing other intensive stuff. i.e. if he's playing a game like Minecraft (IKR? MC for this build? Lulz) that is generating the world on his RAID array as he explores it (the SSD probably would be better in general in this situation for a lot of reasons), he will take an FPS hit as his RAID array will increase CPU usage leaving less for Minecraft (which is only relevant because Java is terrible for that type of stuff).

I know that's unlikely, but it's an example.

The Motherboard is very likely to support RAID 5 (though I've been wrong before), and a dedicated RAID card is likely wasted funds. Software RAID is preferable in most situations.
