New GPU or new monitor?

Frikken

I apologize if this is on the wrong section, but it's kinda hard to tell where this particular question goes.

So at the moment, I am planning to upgrade many portions of my setup. My main concerns, however, are the GPU and displays. I currently have a 760 as my GPU, and 2 1080p 27" monitors to use for gaming and work.

I can upgrade one component, and am currently undecided as to which would be worth it in the long run. I am currently looking at this to use for design and video editing, since both my monitors are TN panels, and I honestly need more room to work on. However, I would also love to upgrade to a 980 so I can have the best GPU available and not worry about upgrading any time soon.

Which should I go for? Both are pretty important to me, and I will have to wait until January to upgrade again, at which point I will be able to address the other component and anything else I need to upgrade. So which would be better to get in the mean time?

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers, and once again I apologize if this is on the wrong section.

760 is still a pretty damn good GPU...What's more important to you? More FPS or desktop real estate.

Personally, I'd go for the display. But that's just my opinion. ;)

@Frikken

same here because a GTX 760 can still play awesome games and i think the monitor will help you the most

I would go with the monitor for now, the 760 is decent and the price for 980s is ridiculous because of the high demand. The monitor will likely be the same price in January but the price of 980s will probably come down by then.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

Keep the 760, buy another monitor for your work, and just game on one monitor.

It really depends on how important gaming is to you. If it were me, I would almost always go with the better GPU. In this case, I would chose the 980.

If the brunt of your time is spent doing productivity things that would benefit you to have 3 monitors, then by all means go for the extra monitor.

Stick with the gpu for now and upgrade your monitor, your gpu is fine but it sounds like you need that new monitor so you can hold out with your 760 for a few more months

Thanks for the responses guys! I decided to go with the monitor after all, as I really need more room to work with on-screen and I need IPS for design work. I went with another monitor (will review it when I have time with it), but the price wasn't too different.
