Here Is What I'm Thinking of Building.

Komirai

Just thought I would get your guys/girls thoughts on this rig before I fully go ahead with the project, so before I do I would like your input on the parts and if there was anything you would change with the build. I'm not so bothered about the budget, however my absolute limit and NOT a penny over is $8000 (I think that's what my currency [bPS] would change over as). Also, I like opinions on cases YOU would use for this sort of build and what kind of cooling you would go for, if it is custom fittings then if possible what parts I'm going to need as I'm a total noob at the moment, plus this is actually my first build in general, but I'm confident in my abilities that I should be fine.... hopefully  . Anyway here is the components of the build:

I thought I heard that the best kind of SLI mode would be 2-Way because games experience a lot of differs in FPS, or something along those lines. So, how come you would go 3-Way SLI here? Also, if Overclocking is going to be happening with the CPU and the GPU's already Overclocked, I thought 1000W wasn't going to be enough, so is 1000W okay then? As for the CPU, isn't 8 Core a little too much at the moment because I feel like I won't be pushing it enough, I mean I don't want to spend extra money if I don't have to for other things.

Unless you need the 16 TB of storage and you really want the WD Blacks, I would do something different for storage. Maybe do four 3TB WD Reds in RAID 1 and then put more money toward the SSD? Also, I would go with a USB DAC instead of a sound card. I terms of cooling, you could do a custom loop, which will be great for those two video cards. Otherwise, you could go with the wind force coolers and maybe get a better CPU cooler? I'm not a fan (pun intended) of the H100i. I have the H320 from Swiftech with 3 NF-F12s and I love it. Those socket 2011(-3) CPUs get really hot. Also, you should look into doing Noctua fans. They really are the best. Lastly, if you are only doing two video cards, you should consider downgrading the CPU to a 5820k. Running one of the GPUs at x8 will have little to no impact on your performance.

Edit: also, if you want to do the Xonar card, you should consider getting different op amps. I've only heard good things about the LME49990.

this is only pulling about 800watts and you get a bit of microstutter but Jayztwocents is using 3x980's right now

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Well, I was just running 2 for proper and the other two for back-up I guess. However, every time I look at it it seems wrong, so I'm going back to just 2x 4TB HDD. As for you mentioning USB DAC, can you explain what they are because I have NEVER heard of it... I mean, what can be better than an actual dedicated sound card? As for the Watercooling, the H100i is the best Liquid Cooler there is in terms of temp, and I've been all over the place including the video from Linus doing the test of the H100i. Also, the Noctua fans are no longer thee best in terms of Temperature and Performance, not only that but the Phanteks Fans performs a lot better than Noctua with 200RPM less.

I just changed to that, because before I was going to go with Noctua's because I thought they were the best until I looked around more and more I came across the Phanteks ones. Also, why would I need to change the OP AMPS as well? Need a little more explanation there. How many GPU's should you think I should be running for this sort of build? I thought 2 would be best.

Hello. I thought it would be a lot of fun to build this on pcpartpicker so I did. Here you go! http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WDHY23

Are you using the SSD's one for RAID and other for back-up (on essentials only), and the other HDD for mass storage like games and stuff or whatever your going to use all that space up on?

@Komirai,

I'm a bit envious, but do have some suggestions. If you can get it, I would suggest the Swiftech H240-X cpu cooler. It is available now in the US and should be available in the UK shortly. Given that the motherboard supports M.2, you may as well go for a larger and faster ssd. Perhaps Samsung XP941 Series 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive. I presume the WD Black are going to be in one or more RAID array. If so I would suggest going for drives designed to work in such arrays, Western Digital Red Pro 4TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive.

If you haven't already, you may want to look at the Phanteks Enthoo line of cases. Phanteks Enthoo Series Primo Aluminum is particularly nice. It includes a LED lighting controller along with a PWM fan hub that lets one control a number of case fans off of a single motherboard PWM header. There is also the less expensive Phanteks Enthoo Pro which includes the PWM hub but not the LED controller.

The motherboard includes a very good sound sub-system. Depending on your "ear", you likely will not hear a difference between the add-on card and the on-board sound.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Thank you for some good suggestions, by the looks of it the Swiftechs have gotten the name for being the Noctua of Liquid Cooling and it by far does a much better job than the H100i, so I have gone for that instead.

As for the Storage, well I have change it a little bit so I have updated the parts with the new link at the beginning of the thread. I was just wondering also, what is the difference between BLACK & RED WDR HDD's? Difference in performance? I'm confused.

Again with cases, for some reason just doesn't appeal to me as some other cases like for example the Corsair 750D.

As for the dedicated sound card, you will most definitely will hear a difference even if it is suttle and the on-board cards are as good as, but might as well add that better experience overall if I can.

I'VE UPDATED THE LINK WITH THE CHANGED PARTS.

EDIT: Is the power supply I have be able to run all this with the CPU and GPU most likely going to be quite higly OC'd, with the CPU being the more primary one to receive the punishing of being OC'd to possibly 4.4 or 4.6GHz?

I think you are making the right move with the hard drives. 16 TB seems like a little much.

A DAC is a Digital to Analog Converter. Its pretty much just like a sound card except it runs over USB instead of PCIe and its external. There are far more options for DACs than there are sound cards out there. Also, there are few sound cards that are better than the Xonar Essence (pretty much just Digigram cards are better), however, there are many DACs that will out preform the Xonar Essence.

Also, in terms of AIO liquid coolers, the H100i is good, but not the best. The Corsair H105 and H110, and the Swiftech H220-X and H320 will all outperform it.

As for the fans, I'm not in the know with those Phantek ones.

OP Amps. Pretty much these are the little guys in your sound card that are in charge of amplifying the sound. The Xonar Essence has swappable OP amps, as in, you can remove the stock ones and put in new ones. Some people do this because the stock ones are only okay, and they will replace them with different ones to "color the sound" differently. It's similar to changing the tubes on an old vacuum tube amp: different tubes change the sound.

As for multiple GPUs, yes, 2 way configurations are usually regarded as the best for most people who want more than one.

WD Red drives are designed for use in RAID arrays and NAS. They include some features that improve performance/reliability in those environments. WD Black are designed for high performance desktop use. Either will do for your build.

I don't really understand why the new storage plan includes two 512GB ssd. A single 1TB unit can be partitioned and will have a longer useful life.

I hope your speakers are good enough to reflect the quality of sound generated by the Xonar card.

Thank you for that explanation, I guess I will go and have a look into it, however what would be a rough cost for a decent DAC? Any you would recommend?

Okay, for the GPUs I think I will just stick with the 2-Way SLI Setup, because I don't want that crazy fluctuation you get with 3-Way and 4-Way.

Sorry, I will just cut down to 500GB as to weather I will get a full TB one, I don't know. Seems a little unnecessary seems I'm copping with a 500GB Hard Drive with my PC.

To be honest, the speakers aren't that good for something like a Xona, however I pretty much always use headsets and the one I'm getting shall do it more than justifiable.

-snip-

DACs range greatly in price ($50-several thousand dollars). I don't have tons of experience with them, but I found these articles online:

http://lifehacker.com/five-best-digital-to-analog-converters-dacs-483393503

http://www.stuff.tv/music/5-best-dacs-how-make-your-digital-music-sound-amazing/feature

Also, you might want to head over to Head-Fi, those folks will know more about DACs than the average user here.
