Old Routers

VainApple

Hello guys. I am learning networking at University and I am currently in my first year. I am very excited to learn networking as it is what I would like to do as my future job. I was just curious, I have an old router just lying around at home and was wondering what you guys recommend that I can do with it?

Thanks for listening to me - Ste.

Nice find. I was thinking of turning the old router into a WAP but I am not sure how to do this and what are the risks as I am fairly new to networking. This website you posted seems helpful :)

making a WAP is very easy ill see if i can find you a website! but you will need some sort of ethernet connection to give your router connectivity right ill edit this post in 2 mins when i find a website http://www.tested.com/tech/298-how-to-use-an-old-router-to-expand-your-wi-fi-network/

Good stuff. I am liking this. Will this old router help with download speed on my Xbox 360 by any chance? I started a download of a 6.5GB game yesterday at about 11:45 AM, and it finished at..... 8PM.....

As mentioned before, you could use it as a WAP. Just place the secondary router somewhere in your home you get bad reception, Get into the configuration of the secondary router and turn off DHCP. Then run an ethernet cable from the primary to the secondary router, and make sure to plug it into one of the LAN ports, not the WAN port. Also if the router has extra LAN ports open, it will also act as a switch in this mode.

There are quite a few things actually! Here are a few things I would do with it-

  1. Add a bit of more features through open software such as Open DD WRT
  2. Use it as a range extended or modem with bridge mode if you are picking up a new router (not a combo)
  3. Since you are studying networking, use it as a test router for backtrack cracking
  4. Use it as a separate line such as for backing up only or for guests only
