Question about the core i7 4770k and the 4790k

i was wondering if both of these chips were identical physically, so could i take the 4790k and 4770k and use the same motherboard for both also would these motherboards work for both of them ?

 

MSI Z87-G45-GAMING ATX Motherboard

 

ASUS H87-PLUS ATX Intel H87 Motherboard

 

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Intel LGA1150 Z97 ATX Motherboard

 

and finally will any socket 1150 motherboard work with these processors

Getting the H87 Asus is kind of a waste since H87 can't overclock and you're buying overclockable cpus.

You are better off going with a z97 board, I would go for the MSI Gaming 5

Yeah both would work, but the 4790k requires a bios update for the z87 and (IIRC) h87

Desktop: i7-4790k, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Seagate Barracuda 3TB, 2xR9 290 Vapor-X's (1 working atm), Asus Z97-Pro, NZXT H440 White, 16GB G. Skill Sniper RAM, NZXT HALE V90 850W.

A bios update is needed but the Z/H87 can run devil's canyon

The 4790k will work out of the box with (x)97 boards and any other 1150 board will need a bios update. The 4770k will work out of the box in any 1150 board.

1. Because more often than not Z87 can be found much cheaper

2. Because some people still have a Z87 board from having a 4670k or 4770k.

Well in his case, he is not in the 'some people' group since he doesn't have an 4670k or 4770k

That leaves reason number one. While it is true that z87 boards are often on sale, it may be easier to just spend that extra 10 dollar for a (x)97 board so you don't have To deal with a bios update.

Especially for a beginner, can a bios update be a real struggle
