Thinking of getting a Fostex T50RP V1, anyone have experience with them?

Infernalz

Title kind of covers it, I'm looking into getting a pair of headphones and came across the Fostex T50RP V1s. They seem as though they would be a good buy but I'm hoping someone would have experience with them to show if they'd be worth the $240 I'd be spending on them (with a 6.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, and shipping US). I've had some cheaper headsets before and think it's finally time I get something that's solid and would actually last longer than like 2 years, especially without having a mic on it to add a point of failure.

I have no real preference in regards to open/closed since I can't recal what any of my last ones were, over the ear is prefered, and would only be used for gaming/music/podcasts, so these seem like they would fit the bill.

Although, I'm starting off with a few setbacks; my computer is about 6 years old at this point and I'd be worried about if it could even power this beast, let alone if it would be worth buying better headphones in the first place if I'd be using them on this relic, and if the 6.5mm to 3.5mm adapter would make any difference.

Either way, I have ~$240 to spend if there are any better options out there, I'm no audiophile but I'm just done with headsets breaking on me and want something solid that sounds good.

T50RP is nice, but I think $240 is too much. I can get them at ~$120 locally (assuming we're talking about the same thing). At that price, I'd go with the Sony MDR-1R, or add a little more for Hifiman HE400 (which is a planar headphone, like the T50RP)

Terribly sorry, I'll put a link, but I'm talking about the modded Fostex T50RP Version 1 not the base model, along with their adapter. The Sony MDR-1R and Hifiman HE400 look nice but at $300 each (that I'm seeing on Newegg) might be a little outside of my range, though if they are that good I might be able to.

I did a review on the V3, though that doesn't really translate as the differetn versions are specifically made to sound different. If you didn't watch that youtube video by teksyndicate on the site, watch it. It should go over the differences between versions.

Watch logans video on each version, his is the best.

V1 is the easiest to drive but with a motherboard that old I'm really not sure. What's the model?

I only have had experience with the V3 so can't say too much about the sound but you'll probably like them. However, the comfort is lacking without the head cushion so you might want to get something for that if you want that headphone. I also like the V3 pads a lot better.

Truth be told that video is the whole reason I even knew about these :), it also seemed that the version 1s might be more for me from what he was saying, but it's hard to really grasp what he was describing with no real audio knowledge or things to compare with.

It is a P5N-EM-HDMI.

If I do end up buying these I plan on getting the version 3 pads and the headband.

I think you might as well just get the V3s then if you're going to do that. I'm not sure how different they would sound since the pads will change the sound.

Dude, it's a modded T50RP.

They sound quite different. The v1 is more neutral.

Yeah that motherboard probably won't work. You'll need to get some kind of amp, but that might happen with most headphones you'll get.

Hmm, well that's unfortunate, but still immensely helpful to know now instead of if I had gotten them first and found out the hard way, but still thanks for the help! I'll just wait until I can either get an amp or a real computer first.

Anyway, unless anyone else has some experience with these and wants to share I'll just consider this thread pretty much closed.
