TN or IPS for GAMING

Rex Aevum

Hey guys, I am trying to get a new 1440p or above monitor and still can't decide which would be better for me:

A TN panel with higher refresh rates for when I play fps (non-competitively)

A IPS for when I play RPS, action games

I was considering getting a rog swift, cause it has g-sync and all the reviews say it is a great monitor, but it's so hard to get I started looking for other monitors, and thought about getting the acer 4k g-sync monitor, or the lg 34UM95 ultrawide monitor, or even a cheaper option like the overlord tempest oc.

But with all these choices I can't decide which would be the best monitor for non-competitive games, for the next 3-4 years. I play a lot of RPGs, action games and shooters, not big on simulators or rts games.

For thous of you who have any of these monitors: how do you like them? Is there something you don't like about them? Any other models that I should consider would be welcomed with open arms!

Thanks in advance!

If you are a serious competitive FPS counter-strike pro gamer, then an TN panel might be the best solution for you.

If not, IPS is a nobrainer imo.

If you want good quality colour get an IPS. Although this will likely be only 60Hz which some people do not really like for gaming. (I have a IPS and use it for gaming fine)

However if you want really fast refresh rates than a good gaming TN panel would be better, the colour is generally rubbish though.

I know people who swear by gaming monitors and others that prefer their accurate colours. If you can you should take a look at the difference somewhere and go with what you prefer. You may find the bad colour really annoying or that you could live with it for fast refresh rates.

TN if you want speed and refresh rate with bad colour accuracy and viewing angles

IPS/PLS if you want a beautiful screen with good viewing angles with 4ms slower response time.

4ms only matters in super competitive twitch gameplay so if you dont do that dont bother

Will input lag/refresh rate matter for MOBA games? I've only used laptops until now (currently using ASUS G750) and it feels like there is essentially zero input lag. Will this feeling hold true for some of the higher end IPS panels or will I have to go with a TN to get the same feeling? Ghosting is also something I would like to avoid.

I personally use a TN panel because of the higher refresh rate. I used to be a competitive cs player and the difference from a 60hz to 144hz monitor is night and day. I also play games like league and dota now and it does make a difference having a higher refresh rate.

but yeah... an IPS panel will LOOK better but not perform as well in certain games.

It's hard to say for some people. I say you go to a place that sells monitors and take a look for yourself. I personally don't see to much of a difference in the colors when I get the correct settings on my TN monitor. Since you say you feel no input lag on your monitor you probably won't notice too much of a difference once you get a TN panel. That may not hold true to some IPS monitors, that goes for ghosting too since their response times are higher they are more prone to ghosting.

If your computer specs allow you frame rate to go above 60 fps then I would say to go for a 144 Hz monitor. I'd much rather have smoother gameplay than pretty colors when I am playing video games. So go for the 144 hz unless you are gonna do some sort of graphic editing which would require color accuracy.

Good looks. I'm pretty sensitive to input lag having played fighting games on CRTs for so many years. I think TN fits me better. Unfortunately It seems my only option is the ROG swift (gotta have the g-sync and 1440p), so I'll wait for a price drop or for competitors to emerge.

I don't really care about viewing angles, because i sit right in fron of my screen, but i do care about contrast and colors, meaning I want my blacks to be very black and my whites to be very white and for the colors to be distinct and deep.

Any models I should consider?

Most modern displays have pretty low response times and you shouldn't need to worry about it.

Yes, unfortunately many people seem to forget to do that or don't realise. Maybe this should be added somewhere on this forum where people can easily see it or so that members like you or I can refer other members to it. Just a thought. Unless it's already mentioned somewhere already. :)

It's not. It's not 'protocol' either but quoting and tagging seems to work the best.

TN has the fastest responce time. Down to 1ms  They are the undisputed best gaming monitors like the ROG Swift @ $800. Its the combination of 144Mhz and a TN

PLS panels have the best color

IPS are better then the entry level TN panel but are slow

If you want a nice budget gaming monitor ASUS VG24QE 24" 144Hz  $260 TN 1ms

I was thinking about ROG Swift, but since there is no way for me to look at it in store, and don't know how good or bad the image looks in real life, its hard for me to make a decision. I'm very interested in g-sync, as for 144hz my setup will not drive games at such high refresh rates Im just curious, should I just bypass the rog for a good IPS monitor for almost half the price @ 60Hz, like the BenQ BL2710PT or something like it, since I play mostly non-competitive games, like RPSs and action games (Shadows of Mordor etc), and FPS (Far Cry 4 etc), and care much more about running on very high settings than high Fps? The price is not the main issue, I am willing to pay more if it will give me a better experience and what I want, but paying a lot of money fore something Im probably not gonna use, and if a cheaper alternative can do what I want that would be the smarter option.

IMO I prefer IPS, TNs can be good but you tend to need to spend a lot before they get there (e.g. Swift). The viewing angles start to get more important when you get up to the 27"+ range IMO even if you only care about looking at it front on. The Korean 27" 1440p IPS/PLS screens are really nice, I use a X-Star DP2710LED PLS overclocked to 90Hz and maintain 100% of the sRGB colour space, it does 120Hz but 90Hz is closer to the frame rate I usually get in game and I feel more comfortable leaving it there, all this for $300. Input latency isn't an issue on MOST modern monitors and can affect both IPS or TN as it has more to do with the controller then the panel, the higher pixel response time on IPS results in a very slight increase in motion blur which isn't a big issue IMO unless you are comparing it to a ULMB screen but they sacrifice colours/brightness even further as a trade off.

I wonder if it would be a good idea/possible to have the follow option on by default when starting a new thread?

I've been having a hard time deciding between the two. Right now I have a relatively cheap TN monitor from Asus which doesn't seem too bad, but I've been wanting to get an IPS monitor for more accurate colours.

Does anyone have a good IPS panel to recommend? There are so many. I really want something with narrow bezels, since I plan to have a multiple monitor set up. I've been looking at the Dell UltraSharp U2414H, but it's kinda pricey in Canada.

I game but not that much. Color is more important. I have the ASUS PB278Q 2560X1440 27 " PLS panel 60Hz. Still the picture quality just blows me away. I went from a IPS 1080 to this and there is no comparison. The PLS it stunning and its fast. But you need to see it to decide. Is 144Hz worth it? For me this is fine.

I live in the us, and my budget is around 400-800 $.

If I can get a good monitor for around 4400-500 $ I'll be able to buy another gtx 970 for sli,

Love the price, but I can't find a decent review online, where they talk about color, input lag etc?

http://www.digitalversus.com/lcd-monitor/acer-k272hul-p20417/test.html

It's not the fastest display but it's nice for the price.

There are better displays albeit quite a bit pricer: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/dell-monitor-u2713hm
