Building "The Surgeon" 5960X Black & White Build

innisviviers

Okay, so this is a bit of a 'hobby build'.  I've always wanted a good looking black & white computer, using parts that require not custom painting it in the shed, simply plug-and-play beautiful.  So with the recent release of X99 and the brilliant H440 I no longer had a choice but to build "The Surgeon" - clinical good looks and 'cutting edge' technology... get it?

The problem with this being a 'hobby build' is that I recently built my personal Z97, 4790K gaming rig and it delivers all the oomph I need for AAA gaming, music and videos etc.  This white little monster is now finished and has gone up on Fleabay in an attempt to recoup costs. Below I've spec'd out the parts and some explanation for why I chose them, plus some pictures.  The real crime here is that I've only booted this beast to see if everything is working and have not done any benchmarks etc. to see how it really performs... trust me, if I do I'll want to keep it so I know not to even go there.

Enjoy the show and let me know if you have questions/comments.

Case

NZXT H440 - White Performance Case with side window. Protective stickers still in place.

Automotive grade paint finish, very sleek looking case. All metal design makes it seriously sturdy. Cable management space behind motherboard tray and power supply shroud makes for a very clean build.

Motherboard
Asus X99 Deluxe White - all the extras you'll ever need including AC Wireless, Bluetooth, Fan Extension Board, Thermal Probe, M.2 Bracket, M.2 PCIe Expansion Card, one touch auto overclocking and an isolated onboard sound circuit with amplified HD Audio for headphone users.

CPU
Intel 5960X - 8 Core, 16 threads, 3.5GHz (auto overclock via Asus Optimization easily reaches 4.4GHz) - fastest CPU on the planet

Memory
16GB Quad Channel (4x4GB) Crucial Balistix Sport Low Profile DDR4 (2400MHz, 16-16-16 low latency)

Video Card
MSI 4GB NVidia GTX 980 with reference cooler - fastest single GPU card available. Capable of running 4 screens simultaneously, 3 in surround and one additional or any configuration in between.

I would personally add at least a second GTX 980 to this build at a later stage. The motherboard is capable of running 4xSLI so there is plenty of room for expansion.

Power Supply
EVGA 1000W Supernova G2 - 10 year warranty, modular and more than enough headroom for expansion. I use a 1000W G1 in my personal rig, by all accounts this one is even better.

Always nice to see a review that finds nothing negative about a part.

Closed Loop CPU Cooler
Corsair H110 280mm Extreme - bigger radiator for better overclocking performance, best all-in-one liquid cooler I've ever used.

Fans
Aerocool Dead Silence black and white LED fans  - 3 x 120mm front intake, 1 x 140mm exhaust, 2 x 140mm on radiator
Very quiet, fluid bearing fans, rubber grommets and dual material technology.

Stock NZXT fans are cheaper rifle bearing fans and significantly louder. I personally would never use them.

For comparison, the Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition fans I have in my personal rig produce 35dBA noise at full speed, the Dead Silence fans produce 14.2dBA!

Looks nice. BUT YOU NEED TO TAKE THE PLASTIC OFF THE WINDOW. Also you can sand off the green coating on the GeForce GTX logo if you want it white

Nice, but mistake on the DS fans. Mine's only 5 months old and the knocking coming from it is just terrible, but nice build.

Thanks.  All these pretty fans are probably a false economy anyway.  I originally planned to use Corsair Air fans, but the radiator ones on my personal rig vibrate my whole desk on full speed so I guess none of them are perfect.

What? It is supposed to come off? ;) I'm selling it so the new owner can have the pleasure of peeling off the plastic.  Regarding the logo, totally agree, if this was a personal build the logo would be sanded.

That could just be a fluke. So far my aerocool ds fan is great

What are those black clip thingies you use on the 24 pin connector?

They're cable combs/clips. It just keeps the cables neat and lined up, I use them on the PCIe and CPU cables too purely for looks.

Nicely done with the cables :) Would look really cool if you manage to "mod" the GPU light to be white instead of green.

Agreed.  One thing I still need to figure out is how to cover up the red Q-Code light and power light and the green reset button light.  I find it a bit disappointing that Asus make this awesome black and white board and when you turn it on there are red, green and yellow indicator LEDs that are quite bright, especially in a white high gloss case... spoils the color scheme.

The SSDs almost make this build. Awesome gloss white casing and silver writing. I see you're current build is a red NZXT, I'll soon be posting pictures of my red and black NZXT build.

Ordered this case badge from China a while ago and it arrived today. Black metal skull. Should I stick this to the front?

I'm usually not that fond of white machines because I find they always look a bit flimsy, but this looks pretty damn cool. I really like how you put 4 or more cable combs between the Graphics card and the part where it goes out of sight. Brilliant.
